1 - حدثنا الشيخ الجليل أبو جعفر محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسى ابن بابويه القمي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثني أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا علي بن موسى بن جعفر بن أبي جعفر الكمنداني، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى الاشعري، قال: حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن أبي نجران، عن عاصم بن حميد، عن محمد بن قيس، عن أبي جعفر محمد بن علي الباقر (عليه السلام)، قال: أوحى الله تبارك وتعالى إلى آدم (عليه السلام): يا آدم، إني أجمع لك الخير كله في أربع كلمات، واحدة منهن لي، وواحدة لك، وواحدة فيما بيني وبينك، وواحدة فيما بينك وبين الناس، فأما التي لي فتعبدني ولا تشرك بي شيئا، وأما التي لك فاجازيك بعملك أحوج ما تكون إليه، وأما التي بيني وبينك فعليك الدعاء وعلي الاجابة، وأما التي فيما بينك وبين الناس فترضى للناس ما ترضى لنفسك (1).

قال

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father (ra) narrated to me. He said: `Ali b. Musa b. Ja`ar b. Abi Ja`far al-Kamandani narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa al-Ash`ari narrated to us. He said: `Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Najran narrated to us from `Asim b. Humayd from Muhammad b. Qays from Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir (as). He said: Allah revealed to Adam (as): O Adam! Surely, I have gathered all goodness for you in four sayings: one of them is for Me, one is for you, one is for that which is between Me and you, and one is for that which is between you and the people. (1) As for the one that is Mine, it is: worship Me and do not associate partners with Me. (2) As for the one that is yours: I will reward you for your work when you are most in need of it. (3) As for the one that is between Me and you: Betake to supplication, and I will betake to its response. (4) As for the one that is between you and the people: Want for the people what you want for yourself.

2 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا  محمد بن الحسن الصفار، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبي هاشم الجعفري، قال: سمعت علي بن موسى الرضا (عليه السلام) يقول: إلهي بدت قدرتك ولم تبد هيئة، فجهلوك وقدروك (1)، والتقدير على غير ما به وصفوك، وإني برئ - يا إلهي - من الذين بالتشبية طلبوك، ليس كمثلك شئ، إلهي ولن يدركوك، وظاهر ما بهم من نعمك دليلهم عليك لو عرفوك، وفي خلقك - يا إلهي - مندوحة أن يتناولوك، بل سووك بخلقك، فمن ثم لم يعرفوك، واتخذوا بعض آياتك ربا، فبذلك وصفوك، تعاليت ربي عما به المشبهون نعتوك (2).

يقول

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to us from Abi Hisham al-Ja`fari. He said: I heard `Ali b. Musa al-Rida (as) say: My God! Your power is apparent, even though You do not have a form. So, they become ignorant of You and they [try to] measure You, while the [true] measure is other than how they describe You. I dissociate, My God, from those who seek You by alikeness (tashbih). There is none like unto You. My God! They cannot comprehend You. If they [wanted to] recognize You, their indicator would be the apparent of Your blessings with them. Your creation, My Lord, is far removed from being used [as a similitude] to understanding You, but they compare You to Your creation, and thusly they do not recognize You. They have taken Your signs as a lord, and by that they describe You. You are exalted, my Lord, over what those who liken describe You by.

3 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا علي بن الحسين السعد آبادي، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن سنان، عن المفضل بن عمر، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن جده (عليهم السلام)، قال: سئل الحسين بن علي (عليهما السلام) فقيل له: كيف أصبحت، يا بن رسول الله؟ قال: أصبحت ولي رب فوقي، والنار أمامي، والموت يطلبني، والحساب محدق بي، وأنا مرتهن بعملي، لا أجد ما أحب، ولا أدفع ما أكره، والامور بيد غيري، فإن شاء عذبني، وإن شاء عفا عني، فأي فقير أفقر مني! (3)

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid narrated to us from his father from Muhammad b. Sinan from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his grandfather (as). He said: Al-Husayn b. `Ali (as) was asked – it was said to him: How was your morning, O son of the Messenger of Allah? He said: I awoke with a Lord above me, the Fire before me, death seeking me, and the Judgment staring at me. I am dependant upon my deeds. I cannot find what I love, nor can I repel what I hate. The affairs are in the hand of one other than me – if He wills, He may punish me, and if He wills, He may pardon me. Which poor person is poorer than me?!

4 - حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن مسرور (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا الحسين بن محمد بن عامر، عن عمه عبد الله بن عامر، قال: حدثني أبو أحمد محمد بن زياد الازدي، عن المفضل بن عمر، قال: قال الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليه السلام): بلية الناس عظيمة، إن دعوناهم لم يجيبونا، وإن تركناهم لم يهتدوا بغيرنا (4).

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masrur (ra) narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. `Amer narrated to us from his uncle `Abdullah b. `Amer. He said: Abu Ahmad Muhammad b. Ziyad al-Azdi narrated to me from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar. He said: Al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as) said: The affliction of the people is great: if we call to them, they do not take heed to us; and if we abandon them, they will not be guided by other than us.

5 - قال المفضل: وسمعت الصادق (عليه السلام) يقول لاصحابه: من وجد  برد حبنا على قلبه، فليكثر الدعاء لامه، فإنها لم تخن أباه (1).

Mufaddal said: I heard Al-Sadiq (as) say to his companions: He who finds the coolness of our love upon his heart shall increase his supplications for his mother, for surely, she did not betray his father.

6 - حدثنا الحسين بن إبراهيم بن ناتانه (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن إبراهيم الكرخي، قال: قلت للصادق (عليه السلام): إن رجلا رأى ربه عزوجل في منامه، فما يكون ذلك؟ فقال: ذلك رجل لا دين له، إن الله تبارك وتعالى لا يرى في اليقظة، ولا في المنام، ولا في الدنيا، ولا في الآخرة (2).

...فقال

Al-Husayn b. Ibrahim b. Natana (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from his father from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr rom Ibrahim al-Karkhi. He said: I said to al-Sadiq (as): A man saw his Lord in his dream, so what is that? So, he said: That is a man with no religion. Surely, Allah cannot be seen when awake, nor in a dream, nor in this world, nor in the Hereafter.

7 - حدثنا محمد بن علي ماجيلويه (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا عمي محمد بن أبي القاسم، قال: حدثني محمد بن علي الصيرفي الكوفي، قال: حدثنا محمد بن سنان، عن أبان بن عثمان الاحمر، قال: قلت للصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليه السلام): أخبرني عن الله تبارك وتعالى، لم يزل سميعا بصيرا عليما قادرا؟ قال: نعم. فقلت له: فإن رجلا ينتحل موالاتكم أهل البيت يقول: إن الله تبارك وتعالى لم يزل سميعا بسمع، وبصيرا ببصر، وعليما بعلم، وقادرا بقدرة. قال: فغضب (عليه السلام)، ثم قال: من قال ذلك ودان به فهو مشرك، وليس من ولايتنا على شئ، إن الله تبارك وتعالى ذات علامة سميعة بصيرة قادرة (3).

Muhammad b. `Ali Majiluwayh (rh) narrated to us. He said: My uncle Muhammad b. Abi’l Qasim narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Ali al-Sayrafi al-Kufi narrated to me. He said: Muhammad b. Sinan narrated to us from Aban b. `Uthman al-Ahmar. He said: I said to al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as): Inform me about Allah: Does He not cease in hearing, seeing, knowing, and being powerful? He said: Yes. So, I said to him: There is a man who claims to be upon your wilaya, the Ahl al-Bayt, and he says: “Allah does not cease in seeing through sight, and hearing through [an instrument of] hearing, and knowing through knowledge, and being powerful through [an instrument of] power.” So, he (as) became angry, then said: He who says this and takes his religion from this is a pagan that is not upon our wilaya in a thing. Surely, Allah is knowing, hearing, seeing, and powerful [without the aid of anything].

8 - حدثنا حمزة بن محمد بن أحمد بن جعفر بن محمد بن زيد بن علي ابن الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب (عليهم السلام)، قال: أخبرني علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم سنة سبع وثلاثمائة، قال: حدثنا أبي، قال: حدثنا محمد بن أبي عمير، عن حفص بن البختري، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن جده (عليهم السلام)، قال: وقع بين سلمان الفارسي (رحمه الله) وبين رجل كلام وخصومة، فقال له الرجل: من أنت يا سلمان؟ فقال سلمان: أما أولي وأولك فنطفة قذرة، وأما آخري وآخرك فجيفة منتنة،  فإذا كان يوم القيامة ووضعت الموازين، فمن ثقل ميزانه فهو الكريم، ومن خف ميزانه فهو اللئيم (1).

قال وقع بين سلمان الفارسي و بين رجل كلام و خصومة

Hamza b. Muhammad b. Ahmad b. Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Zayd b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim informed me in 307 AH. He said: My father narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr narrated to us from Hafs b. al-Bakhtari from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his grandfather (as). He said: Salman al-Farisi (rh) was quarrelling with a man. So, the man said to him: Who are you, Salman? So, Salman said: As for my beginning and your beginning, it was an impure sperm. As for my end and your end, it will be a rotting corpse. On the Day of Resurrection, when the scales are placed, the one whose scale is heavy will be noble, and the one whose scale is light will be depraved.

9 - حدثنا محمد بن إبراهيم بن إسحاق الطالقاني (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد الهمداني، قال: حدثنا علي بن الحسن بن علي بن فضال، عن أبيه، قال: سمعت أبا الحسن علي بن موسى الرضا (عليه السلام) يقول: إني مقتول ومسموم ومدفون بأرض غربة، أعلم ذلك بعهد عهده إلي أبي عن أبيه عن آبائه عن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)، ألا فمن زارني في غربتي كنت أنا وآبائي شفعاؤه يوم القيامة، ومن كنا شفعاؤه نجا ولو كان عليه مثل وزر الثقلين (2).

Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq al-Talaqani (ra) narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Hamadani narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Faddal narrated to us from his father. He said: I heard Aba’l Hasan `Ali b. Musa al-Rida (as) say: Surely, I will be killed, poisoned, and buried in a strange land. I know that due to a covenant that was given to me by my father from his father from his forefathers from the Messenger of Allah (s). Surely, he who visits me in my isolation shall have the intercession of my forefathers and I on the Day of Resurrection. He who has our intercession will be saved, even if his sins are like that of the two heavyweights (humanity and the Jinn).

10 - حدثنا علي بن أحمد بن عبد الله بن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، قال: حدثني أبي، عن جده أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، قال: حدثني جعفر بن عبد الله الناونجي (3)، عن عبد الجبار بن محمد، عن داود الشعيري، عن الربيع صاحب المنصور، قال: بعث المنصور إلى الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليه السلام) يستقدمه لشئ بلغه عنه، فلما وافى بابه خرج إليه الحاجب فقال: أعيذك بالله من سطوة هذا الجبار، فإني رأيت حرده (4) عليك شديدا، فقال الصادق (عليه السلام): علي من الله جنة واقية تعينني عليه إن شاء الله، استأذن لي عليه، فاستأذن فأذن له، فلما دخل سلم فرد (عليه السلام)، ثم قال له: يا جعفر، قد علمت أن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) قال لابيك علي بن أبي طالب: لولا أن تقول فيك طوائف من أمتي ما قالت النصارى في المسيح، لقلت فيك قولا لا تمر بملا إلا أخذوا من تراب قدميك، يستشفون به. وقال علي (عليه السلام): يهلك في اثنان ولا ذنب لي: محب غال، ومفرط قال قال ذلك اعتذارا منه أنه لا يرضى بما يقول فيه الغالي والمفرط، ولعمري إن عيسى بن  مريم (عليه السلام) لو سكت عما قالت فيه النصارى لعذبه الله، ولقد تعلم ما يقال فيك من الزور والبهتان، وإمساكك عن ذلك ورضاك به سخط الديان، زعم أوغاد الحجاز ورعاع الناس أنك حبر الدهر وناموسه، وحجة المعبود وترجمانه، وعيبة علمه وميزان قسطه، مصباحه الذي يقطع به الطالب عرض الظلمة إلى ضياء النور، وأن الله لا يقبل من عامل جهل حدك (1) في الدنيا عملا، ولا يرفع له يوم القيامة وزنا، فنسبوك إلى غير حدك (2)، وقالوا فيك ما ليس فيك، فقل فإن أول من قال الحق جدك، وأول من صدقه عليه أبوك، وأنت حري أن تقتص آثارهما وتسلك سبيلهما. فقال الصادق (عليه السلام): أنا فرع من فروع الزيتونة، وقنديل من قناديل بيت النبوة، وأديب السفرة، وربيب الكرام البررة، ومصباح من مصابيح المشكاة التي فيها نور النور وصفو الكلمة الباقية في عقب المصطفين إلى يوم الحشر. فالتفت المنصور إلى جلسائه، فقال: هذا قد أحالني على بحر مواج لا يدرك طرفه، ولا يبلغ عمقه، يحار فيه العلماء، ويغرق فيه السبحاء، ويضيق بالسابح عرض الفضاء، هذا الشجى المعترض في حلوق الخلفاء، الذي لا يجوز نفيه، ولا يحل قتله، ولولا ما يجمعني وإياه شجرة طاب أصلها، وبسق فرعها، وعذب ثمرها، وبوركت في الذر، وقدست في الزبر، لكان مني إليه مالا يحمد في العواقب لما يبلغني من شدة عيبه لنا وسوء القول فينا. فقال الصادق (عليه السلام): لا تقبل في ذي رحمك وأهل الرعاية من أهل بيتك قول من حرم الله عليه الجنة وجعل مأواه النار، فإن النمام شاهد زور وشريك إبليس في الاغراء بين الناس، وقد قال الله تعالى: (يا أيها الذين ءامنوا إن جاءكم فاسق بنبأ فتبينوا أن تصيبوا قوما بجهالة فتصبحوا على ما فعلتم نادمين) (3). ونحن لك أنصار  وأعوان، ولملكك دعائم وأركان، ما أمرت بالعرف والاحسان، وأمضيت في الرعية أحكام القرآن، وأرغمت بطاعتك لله أنف الشيطان، وإن كان يجب عليك في سعة فهمك وكثرة علمك ومعرفتك بآداب الله أن تصل من قطعك، وتعطي من حرمك، وتعفو عمن ظلمك، فإن المكافي ليس بالواصل، إنما الواصل من إذا قطعته رحمه وصلها، فصل رحمك يزد الله في عمرك، ويخفف عنك الحساب يوم حشرك. فقال المنصور: قد صفحت عنك، لقدرك، وتجاوزت عنك لصدقك، فحدثني عن نفسك بحديث أتعظ به، ويكون لي زاجر صدق عن الموبقات. فقال الصادق (عليه السلام): عليك بالحلم فإنه ركن العلم، واملك نفسك عند أسباب القدرة، فإنك إن تفعل ما تقدر عليه كنت كمن شفى غيظا، أو تداوى حقدا، أو يحب أن يذكر بالصولة، اعلم بأنك إن عاقبت مستحقا لم تكن غاية ما توصف به إلا العدل، ولا أعرف حالا أفضل من حال العدل، والحال التي توجب الشكر أفضل من الحال التي توجب الصبر. فقال المنصور: وعظت فأحسنت، وقلت فأوجزت، فحدثني عن فضل جدك علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) حديثا لم تؤثره العامة، فقال الصادق (عليه السلام): حدثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن جده، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): لما أسري بي إلى السماء عهد إلي ربي جل جلاله في علي (عليه السلام) ثلاث كلمات، فقال: يا محمد. فقلت: لبيك ربي وسعديك. فقال عز وجل: إن عليا إمام المتقين، وقائد الغر المحجلين، ويعسوب المؤمنين، فبشره بذلك. فبشره النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) بذلك، فخر علي (عليه السلام) ساجدا شكرا لله عزوجل، ثم رفع رأسه فقال: يا رسول الله، بلغ من قدري حتى أني أذكر هناك؟ قال: نعم، وإن الله يعرفك، وإنك لتذكر في الرفيق الاعلى. فقال المنصور: ذلك فضل الله يؤتيه من يشاء (1).

قال بعث المنصور إلى

...فلما وافى بابه...فقال

`Ali b. Ahmad b. `Abdullah b. Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me from his grandfather Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi. He said: Ja`far b. `Abdullah al-Nawaji narrated to me from `Abd al-Jabbar b. Muhammad from Dawud al-Shu`ayri from al-Rabi` the companion of al-Mansur. He said: [The Caliph] al-Mansur sent for al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as) to respond to something that he was told about. When he reached his gate, the gatekeeper came out to him and said: I seek refuge in Allah on your behalf from the tyranny of this tyrant, for surely, I saw that he had an intense anger against you. So, al-Sadiq (as) said: I have a protective Paradise from Allah to support me from him – God-willingly. Seek permission for me to enter. So, he sought permission and he was permitted.  So, when he entered, he (the Caliph) said the salaam and he (as) responded. Then, he said to him: O Ja`far! I know that the Messenger of Allah (s) said to your father `Ali b. Abi Talib: “If sects from my Nation would not claim for you what the Christians have claimed for the Messiah Jesus the son of Mary, I would have said something about you today that would cause the people to take the dust from beneath your feet and seek treatment from it due to the excellence of your purity.” Also, `Ali (as) said: “Two will be destroyed to no fault of my own: (1) an exaggerating lover [of mine], and (2) an excessive [hater].” He said that to caution that he is not pleased with those who exaggerate and exceed regarding him. By my life, surely, had `Isa b. Maryam (as) been silent regarding what the Christians said about him, Allah would have punished him. You know what falsehood and slander is said about you. Your silence and pleasure regarding that is an indignation to the religion. The bastards of the Hijaz and the rabble of the people allege that you are the sage and legatee of the age, the Proof and the interpreter of the Worshiped, the repository of His knowledge, the scale of His justice, His lantern by which the seeker turns overspreading darkness into the illumination of light; and that Allah does not accept the deeds of one who is ignorant of your status in this world, nor will they uplift the weight [of his scale] in the Hereafter. They have attributed you to a status contrary to your own, and they have said regarding you that which is not in you. So, speak, for the first to speak the truth was your grandfather, and the first to bear him witness in that is your father. You are free to reprise their ways and take their paths. So, al-Sadiq (as) said: I am one of the branches of the olive tree, one of the lamps of the house of prophethood, the writer [whose word overrides the writing of the angels] of travel, the son of the noble and the righteous, one of the lanterns of the niche in which is the light of the Light, and the elite one of the remaining word at the end of the chosen ones until the Day of Revival. So, al-Mansur turned to his seat and said: This has brought me unto a sea whose waves cannot be comprehended and whose depth cannot be reached. The scholars are bewildered in it, the glorious drown in it, and the width of its space narrows in on the swimmer. This is the obstruction in the throat of the caliphs; he cannot be exiled nor is killing him permissible. Had it not been for the tree that unites him and I, with its pure roots, its exalted branches, and its sweet fruits; had it not been blessed in the primordial [world] and sanctified in the scriptures, I would have given him insurmountable consequences after being informed of how he shames us and speaks poorly of us. So, al-Sadiq (as) said: Do not accept what is said regarding your bloodline and the people of favour from your Ahl al-Bayt from those whom Allah has prohibited from Paradise and made their residence the Fire, for the slanderer is a false witness and a partner to Iblis in temptation among the people. Allah says, “O you who believe! If a transgressor comes to you with news, then investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become regretful of what you have done.” (49:6) We are your supporters and helpers, and we are columns and pillars of your rule, as long as you rule by virtuous customs, fulfill the rulings of the Quran with regards to the subjects, and you rub the nose of Satan by your obedience to Allah. If it becomes incumbent upon you, in the capacity of your understanding and in the abundance of your knowledge and in your cognizance of the etiquette of Allah, to connect with one who cuts you off, to give to one who has withheld from you, and to forgive one who oppresses you, then the rewarded one is not simply him who connects, but him who connects after he had been cut off from his blood relatives. So, connect with your blood relatives, and Allah will prolong your life and lighten the Judgment from you on the Day of your revival. So, al-Mansur said: I have forgiven you due to your status, and I will overlook you due to your sincerity. So, narrate to me from yourself so that I may be admonished, and so that it may prevent me from mortal error. So, al-Sadiq (as) said: Betake to forbearance, for it is the pillar of knowledge. Control yourself in moments of power, for if you can do that, then you will be like one who can cure [himself from] anger or treat [himself from] grudges. Know that if you were to punish a deserving person, there is no goal except carrying out justice. I do not know of a condition more virtuous than the condition of justice. The condition that obliges thankfulness is better than the condition that requires patience. So, al-Mansur said: You have admonished and beautified it, and you have spoken succinctly. So, narrate to me about the virtue of your grandfather `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) – a hadith that the commoners do not have. So, al-Sadiq (as) said: My father narrated to me from his father from his grandfather. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: “When I was raised up to heaven, my Lord pledged three sayings about `Ali (as) to me. He said: ‘O Muhammad!’ So, I said: ‘I am at your service, my Lord.’ So, He said: ‘Surely, `Ali is the Imam of the Godfearing, the Leader of the shining believers, and the Chief of the believers. So, give him glad tidings of that.’” So, the Prophet (s) gave him glad tidings of that, and `Ali (as) fell in prostration of gratitude to Allah. Then, he raised his head and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Tell me, what is my status for me to be mentioned there?” He said: “Yes, surely your Lord recognizes you, and you are mentioned among the highest ranks (rafiq al-a`la).” So, al-Mansur said: That is the blessing of Allah. He gives it to whomever He wills.

11 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا  أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبيه، عن خلف بن حماد الاسدي، عن أبي الحسن العبدي، عن الاعمش، عن عباية بن ربعي، عن عبد الله بن عباس، عن أبيه، قال: قال أبو طالب للنبي (صلى الله عليه وآله): يا بن أخي، الله أرسلك؟ قال: نعم. قال: فأرني آية. قال: ادع لي تلك الشجرة. فدعاها فأقبلت حتى سجدت بين يديه، ثم انصرفت. فقال أبو طالب: أشهد أنك صادق، يا علي صل جناح ابن عمك (1).

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to us from his father from Khalaf b. Hammad al-Asadi from Abi’l Hasan al-`Abdi from al-A`mash from `Abaya b. Rabi`i from `Abdullah b. `Abbas from his father. He said: Abu Talib said to the Prophet (s): O nephew! Did Allah commission you? He said: Yes. He said: Then show me a sign – he said: Call to this tree for me. So, he called to it, and it proceeded until it prostrated before him. Then, it went away. So, Abu Talib said: I bear witness that you are truthful. O `Ali, pray behind your cousin.

- حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثني الحسن بن متيل الدقاق، قال: حدثني الحسن بن علي بن فضال، عن مروان ابن مسلم، عن ثابت بن دينار الثمالي، عن سعيد بن جبير، عن عبد الله بن عباس، أنه سأله، رجل فقال له: يا بن عم رسول الله، أخبرني عن أبي طالب، هل كان مسلما؟ فقال: وكيف لم يكن مسلما، وهو القائل: وقد علموا أن ابننا لا مكذب * * لدينا ولا يعبأ بقيل الا باطل إن أبا طالب كان مثله كمثل أصحاب الكهب حين أسروا الايمان وأظهروا الشرك، فآتاهم الله أجرهم مرتين (2).

أنه سأل رجل فقال له يا بن عم رسول الله ص أخبرني عن أبي طالب...فقال

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Al-Hasan b. Matil al-Daqqaq narrated to me. He said: Al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Faddal narrated to me from Marwan b. Muslim from Thabit b. Dinar al-Thumali from Sa`id b. Jubayr from `Abdullah b. `Abbas. A man asked him, saying: O cousin of the Messenger of Allah! Tell me about Abi Talib. Was he a Muslim? So, he said: How can he not be a Muslim when he is the one that said: “They know that our son is not a liar, The false sayings do not receive our attention.” Surely, Aba Talib was like the companions of the cave, who kept the faith a secret and feigned paganism, so Allah gave them their reward twice.

13 - حدثنا محمد بن إبراهيم بن إسحاق الطالقاني (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد الهمداني، قال: أخبرنا المنذر بن محمد، عن جعفر بن سليمان، عن عبد الله بن الفضل الهاشمي، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليه السلام)، أنه قال: إن مثل أبي طالب مثل أصحاب الكهف حين أسروا الايمان وأظهروا الشرك، فآتاهم الله أجرهم مرتين (3).

Sulayman from `Abdullah b. al-Fadl al-Hashimi from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: Surely, the example of Abi Talib is like that of the companions of the cave, who kept the faith a secret and feigned paganism, so Allah gave them their reward twice.
