Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (rh) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us. He said: Al-`Abbas b. Ma`ruf narrated to us from Sa`dan b. Muslim from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as). He said: Sleep is the relaxation of the body, speech is the relaxation of the soul, and silence is the relaxation of the intellect.

2 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثني أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن سنان، عن المفضل بن عمر، قال: قال الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام): من لم يكن له واعظ من قلبه، وزاجر من نفسه ولم يكن له قرين مرشد، استمكن عدوه من عنقه (2).

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid narrated to me from his father from Muhammad b. Sinan from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar. He said: Al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as) said: Whoever does not have exhortations from his heart, chides from his soul, and a guiding companion has given his enemy a way to his neck.

3 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن يحيى العطار، عن جعفر بن محمد بن مالك الفزاري الكوفي، قال: حدثنا جعفر بن سهل، عن سعيد بن محمد، عن مسعدة بن صدقة، قال: قال لي أبو الحسن موسى بن  جعفر (عليهما السلام): إن عيال الرجل اسراؤه، فمن أنعم الله عليه نعمة فليوسع على اسرائه، فإن لم يفعل أو شك أن تزول عنه تلك النعمة (1).

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us from Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Malik al-Fizari al-Kufi. He said: Ja`far b. Sahl narrated to us from Sa`id b. Muhammad from Mas`ada b. Sadaqa. He said: Abu’l Hasan Musa b. Ja`far (as) said: Surely, the family of a man are [like] his prisoners. Whoever is given a blessing by Allah should give ease to his prisoners. Whoever does not do that or doubts [this], that blessing will be removed from him.

4 - حدثنا محمد بن علي ماجيلويه (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثني أبي، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله، عن الحسن بن محبوب، عن أبي أيوب الخزاز، عن محمد بن مسلم ومنهال القصاب، جميعا، عن أبي جعفر الباقر (عليه السلام)، قال: من أصاب مالا من أربع لم يقبل منه في أربع: من أصاب مالا من غلول أو ربا أو خيانة أو سرقة، لم يقبل منه في زكاة ولا في صدقة ولا في حج ولا في عمرة. وقال أبو جعفر (عليه السلام): لا يقبل الله عزوجل حجا ولا عمرة من مال حرام (2).

Muhammad b. `Ali Majiluwayh (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from Abi Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad b. Muslim and Minhal al-Qassab together from Abi Ja`far al-Baqir (as). He said: Whoever gains wealth from four [sources], it will not be accepted in four [situations]: whoever gains wealth from (1) embezzlement, (2) usury, (3) betrayal, and (4) thievery, it will not be accepted in: (1) zakat, (2) charity (sadaqa), (3) Hajj, and (4) `Umra. Abu Ja`far (as) said: Allah will not accept a Hajj or an `Umra from forbidden wealth.

5 - حدثنا الحسين بن أحمد بن إدريس (رضي الله عنه)، قا: حدثنا أبي، عن جعفر بن محمد بن ماك الكوفي، قال: حدثني محمد بن أحمد المدائني، عن فضل ابن كثير، عن علي بن موسى الرضا (عليه السلام)، قال: من لقي فقيرا مسلما فسلم عليه خلاف سلامه على الغني، لقي الله عزوجل يوم القيامة وهو عليه غضبان (3).

Al-Husayn b. Ahmad b. Idris (ra) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Malik al-Kufi. He said: Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Mada’ini narrated to me from Fadl b. Kathir from `Ali b. Musa al-Rida (as). He said: Whoever meets a poor Muslim and greets him in a way that is different than the way he greets the rich, Allah will be angry when he meets Him on the Day of Resurrection.

6 - حدثنا علي بن أحمد بن موسى (رضي الله عنه) قال: حدثنا محمد بن هارون الصوفي، قال: حدثنا عبيد الله بن موسى الروياني، قال: حدثنا عبد العظيم بن عبد الله الحسني، عن الامام محمد بن علي، عن أبيه الرضا علي بن موسى، عن أبيه موسى بن جعفر، عن أبيه الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن جده (عليهم السلام)، قال: دعا سلمان أبا ذر (رحمة الله عليهما) إلى منزله، فقدم إليه رغيفين، فأخذ أبو ذر الرغيفين يقلبهما، فقال له سلمان: يا أبا ذر، لاي شئ تقلب هذين الرغيفين؟ قال: خفت أن لا يكونا نضيجين. فغضب سلمان من ذلك غضبا شديدا، ثم قال: ما أجرأك حيث تقلب هذين الرغيفين! فوالله لقد عمل في هذا الخبز الماء الذي تحت العرش، وعملت فيه الملائكة حتى ألقوه إلى الريح، وعملت فيه الريح حتى ألقته إلى السحاب، وعمل فيه  السحاب حتى أمطره إلى الارض، وعمل فيه الرعد والملائكة حتى وضعوه مواضعه، وعملت فيه الارض والخشب والحديد والبهائم والنار والحطب والملح، وما لا أحصيه أكثر، فكيف لك أن تقوم بهذا الشكر؟ فقال أبو ذر: إلى الله أتوب، واستغفر الله مما أحدثت، وإليك أعتذر مما كرهت (1).

`Ali b. Ahmad b. Musa (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Harun al-Sufi narrated to us. He said: `Ubaydullah b. Musa al-Rawyani. He said: `Abd al-`Athim b. `Abdullah al-Hasani narrated to us from Imam Muhammad b. `Ali from his father al-Rida `Ali b. Musa from his father Musa b. Ja`far from his father al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his grandfather (as). He said: Salman invited Aba Dharr (rh) to his house and offered him two loaves. So, Abu Dharr took the two loaves and turned them over. So, Salman said to him: O Aba Dharr! For what reason did you turn the two loaves over? He said: I feared that they were not fresh. So, Salman became intensely angry and said: How bold must you be to turn these two loaves over! By Allah, I made this bread from the water that is beneath the Throne, and the angels worked in it until they tossed it to the wind, and the wind worked in it until it tossed it to the cloud, and the cloud worked in it until it rained it to the Earth, and the lightning and the angels worked in it until they placed it in its places, and I worked in it with the earth, wood, iron, animals, fire, firewood, and salt, and that which I cannot count. So, how could you show this type of gratitude? So, Abu Dharr said: I repent to Allah, and I ask Allah’s forgiveness from what I did, and I regret my wrongdoing to you.

7 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن أيوب بن نوح، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن بشر بن مسلمة، عن مسمع أبي سيار، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام)، قال: من تصدق حين يصبح بصدقة، أذهب الله عنه نحس ذلك اليوم (2).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from Ayyub b. Nuh from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Bishr b. Maslama from Masma` Abi Sayyar from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as). He said: Whoever gives charity when he awakes, Allah removes the bad omen of that day from him.

8 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن الحسين السعد آبادي، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبيه، عن فضالة ابن أيوب، عن زيد الشحام، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه محمد ابن علي الباقر، عن أبيه (عليهم السلام)، قال: مرض النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) المرضة التي عوفي منها، فعادته فاطمة سيدة النساء (عليها السلام) ومعها الحسن والحسين (عليهما السلام)، قد أخذت الحسن بيدها اليمنى، وأخذت الحسين بيدها اليسرى، وهما يمشيان وفاطمة بينهما حتى دخلوا منزل عائشة، فقعد الحسن (عليه السلام) على جانب رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) الايمن، والحسين (عليه السلام) على جانب رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) الايسر، فاقبلا يغمزان ما يليهما من بدن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)، فما أفاق النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) من نومه، فقالت فاطمة للحسن والحسين: حبيبي، إن جدكما قد غفا، فانصرفا ساعتكما هذه ودعاه حتى يفيق وترجعان إليه. فقالا: لسنا ببارحين في وقتنا هذا.  فاضطجع الحسن على عضد النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) الايمن، والحسين على عضده الايسر فغفيا، وانتبها قبل أن ينتبه النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله)، وقد كانت فاطمة (عليها السلام) لما ناما انصرفت إلى منزلها، فقالا لعائشة: ما فعلت أمنا؟ قالت: لما نمتما رجعت إلى منزلها. فخرجا في ليلة ظلماء مدلهمة ذات رعد وبرق، وقد أرخت السماء عزاليها (1)، فسطع لهما نور، فلم يزالا يميشيان في ذلك النور، والحسن قابض بيده اليمنى على يد الحسين اليسرى، وهما يتماشيان ويتحدثان، حتى أتيا حديقة بني النجار، فلما بلغا الحديقة حارا، فبقيا لا يعلمان أين يأخذان، فقال الحسن للحسين: إنا قد حرنا، وبقينا على حالتنا هذه، وما ندري أين نسلك، فلا عليك أن ننام في وقتنا هذا حتى نصبح. فقال له الحسين (عليه السلام): دونك يا أخي فافعل ما ترى، فاضطجعا جميعا، واعتنق كل واحد منهما صاحبه وناما. وانتبه النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) من نومته التي نامها، فطلبهما في منزل فاطمة، فلم يكونا فيه، وافتقدهما، فقام النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) على رجليه، وهو يقول: إلهي وسيدي ومولاي، هذان شبلاي، خرجا من المخمصة والمجاعة، اللهم أنت وكيلي عليهما. فسطح للنبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) نور، فلم يزل يمضي في ذلك النور حتى أتى حديقة بني النجار، فإذا هما نائمان قد اعتنق كل واحد منهما صاحبه، وقد تقشعت السماء فوقهما كطبق، فهي تمطر كأشد مطر، ما رآه الناس قط، وقد منع الله عزوجل المطر منهما في البقعة التي هما فيها نائمان، لا يمطر عليهما قطرة، وقد اكتنفتهما حية لها شعرات كآجام (2) القصب وجناحان، جنان قد غطت به الحسن، وجناج قد غطت به الحسين، فلما أن بصر بهما النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) تنحنح، فانسابت الحية وهي تقول: اللهم إني أشهدك وأشهد ملائكتك أن هذين شبلا نبيك، قد حفظتهما عليه ودفعتهما  إليه سالمين صحيحين. فقال لها النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله): أيتها الحية، فمن أنت؟ قالت: أنا رسول الجن إليك. قال: وأي الجن؟ قالت: جن نصيبين، نفر من بني مليح، نسينا آية من كتاب الله عزوجل فبعثوني إليك لتعلمنا ما نسينا من كتاب الله، فلما بلغت هذا الموضع سمعت مناديا ينادي: أيتها الحية، هذان شبلا رسول الله، فاحفظيهما من الآفات والعاهات ومن طوارق الليل والنهار، فقد حفظتهما وسلمتهما إليك سالمين صحيحين، وأخذت الحية الآية وانصرفت. وأخذ النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) الحسن، فوضعه على عاتقه الايمن، ووضع الحسين على عاتقه الايسر، وخرج علي (عليه السلام) فلحق برسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)، فقال له بعض أصحابه: بأبي أنت وأمي، ادفع إلي أحد شبليك، اخفف عنك. فقال: امض، فقد سمع الله كلامك، وعرف مقامك. وتلقاه آخر، فقال: بأبي أنت وأمي، ادفع إلي أحد شبليك، اخفف عنك. فقال: امض فقد سمع الله كلامك، وعرف مقامك. فتلقاه علي (عليه السلام)، فقال: بأبي أنت وأمي يا رسول الله، ادفع إلي أحد شبلي وشبليك حتى اخفف عنك. فالتفت النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) إلى الحسن (عليه السلام)، فقال: يا حسن، هل تمضي إلى كتف أبيك؟ فقال له: والله يا جداه، إن كتفك لا حب إلي من كتف أبي. ثم التفت إلى الحسين (عليه السلام)، فقال: يا حسين، هل تمضي إلى كتف أبيك؟ فقال له: والله يا جداه، إني لاقول لك كما قال أخي الحسن، إن كتفك لاحب إلي من كتف أبي. فأقبل بهما إلى منزل فاطمة (عليها السلام)، وقد ادخرت لهما تميرات، فوضعتها بين أيديهما، فأكلا وشبعا وفرحا، فقال لهما النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله): قوما الآن فاصطرعا. فقاما ليصطرعا، وقد خرجت فاطمة (عليها السلام) في بعض حاجتها، فدخلت فسمعت النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) وهو يقول: إيه يا حسن، شد على الحسين فاصرعه. فقالت له: يا أبه، واعجباه، اتشجع هذا على هذا، اتشجع الكبير على الصغير! فقال لها: يا بنية، أما ترضين أن أقول أنا: يا حسن، شد على الحسين فاصرعه، وهذا حبيبي جبرئيل يقول:  يا حسين، شد على الحسن فاصرعه (1).

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to us from his father from Fadala b. Ayyub from Zayd al-Shahham from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir from his father (as). He said: The Prophet (s) became ill with the illness from which he passed away. So, Fatima the Mistress of Women (as) visited him, and with her were al-Hasan and al-Husayn (as). She took al-Hasan by her right hand and she took al-Husayn by her left hand. They walked, and Fatima was between them, until they entered the house of `A’isha. So, al-Hasan (as) sat to the right of the Messenger of Allah (s) and al-Husayn (as) sat to the left of the Messenger of Allah (s). They began kissing the body of the Messenger of Allah (s), but the Prophet (s) did not awake from his sleep. So, Fatima said to al-Hasan and al-Husayn: “My beloveds! Your grandfather has fallen asleep. So, go for a moment until he awakes, then return to him.” So, they said: “We are not going at this time.” So, al-Hasan lay on the right side of the Prophet (s) and al-Husayn lay on his left side until they fell asleep. They awoke before the Prophet (s), and Fatima (as) had gone back to her house when they had slept. So, they said to `A’isha: “What did our mother do?” She said: “When you both fell asleep, she returned to her house.” So, they left in the darkness of a night that was muddled in thunder and lightning. The sky had loosened its rain and a light dazzled for them. They did not stop walking in that light, while al-Hasan’s right hand held al-Husayn’s left hand. They both walked and talked until they reached the yard of Bani Najjar. When they reached the yard alone, they did not know where they had gone. So, al-Hasan said to al-Husayn: “We have been alone [for so long] that we reached this point. We do not know where to go. So, let us sleep at this moment until we awake.” So, al-Husayn (as) said to him: “Go ahead, brother, I will do the same.” So, they both lay down, and each of them embraced the other, and they slept. The Prophet (s) then awoke from his sleep and he sent for them in the house of Fatima, but they were not there. He longed for them, so the Prophet (s) stood on his feet and he said: “My God, my Master, and my Lord! These two are my cubs, and they have gone due to shortage and starvation. O Allah! You are my guardian over them.” So, a light spread out for the Prophet (s), and he remained in it until he reached the yard of Bani Najjar and found them sleeping, embracing one another. The sky had folded over them like a plate, and even though it was raining intensely – more than anyone had seen before – Allah had prevented the rain from coming onto the land that they had been sleeping in. Not a single drop landed on them. They were encompassed by a serpent that had hair like a tree rich with reeds and two wings: one wing was covering al-Hasan, and one wing was covering al-Husayn. When the Prophet (s) saw them hemmed in, the serpent withdrew, saying: “O Allah! I bear witness to You and to Your angels that these two are the cubs of Your Prophet, and I protected them and I handed them over safely and healthily.” So, the Prophet (s) said to it: “O serpent! Who are you?” It said: “I am the messenger of the Jinn to you.” He said: “Which of the Jinn?” It said: “From the Jinn of Nusaybin, from a delegation of Bani Malih. We forgot a verse from the Book of Allah. So, they sent me to you so that you may teach us what we have forgotten from the Book of Allah. When I reached this place, I heard a caller call out: ‘O serpent! These two are the cubs of the Messenger of Allah, so protect them from pests, impairments, and disasters of the night and day.’ So, I protected them and I have handed them over safely and healthily to you.” Then, the serpent took the verse and left. The Prophet (s) took al-Hasan and put him on his right shoulder and put al-Husayn on his left shoulder. So, `Ali (as) came out and followed the Messenger of Allah (s). One of his companions said to him: “May my mother and my father be your sacrifice! Give me one of your cubs so that I may lighten [the load] for you.” So, he said: “Go, for Allah has heard your words and recognized your status.” Then, `Ali (as) met him and said: “May my mother and my father be your sacrifice, O Messenger of Allah! Give me one of my cubs and your cubs so that I may lighten for you.” So, the Prophet (s) turned to al-Hasan (as) and said: “O Hasan! Would you like to go to the shoulder of your father?” So, he said to him: “By Allah, grandfather, your shoulder is more beloved to me than the shoulder of my father.” Then, he turned to al-Husayn (as) and said: “O Husayn! Would you like to go to the shoulder of your father?” So, he said: “By Allah, grandfather, I say the same as my brother – your shoulder is more beloved to me than the shoulder of my father.” So, he took them to the house of Fatima (as), and she had prepared dates for them and put them in front of them. They ate until they were satiated and happy. Then, the Prophet (s) said to them: “Stand now and wrestle.” So, they stood and wrestled – and Fatima (as) had gone out for a need of hers – so, she entered, and she heard the Prophet (s) saying: “Yes, Hasan, strengthen yourself against al-Husayn, and wrestle with him.” Then, she said to him: “O father! I am astonished. You are encouraging this one over that one, the older against the younger?!” So, he said to her: “O my daughter! Are you not pleased that I am saying: ‘O Hasan! Strengthen yourself against al-Husayn, and wrestle with him’ while my beloved Gabriel is here saying: ‘O Husayn! Strengthen yourself against al-Hasan, and wrestle with him.’?”

9 - حدثنا علي بن أحمد بن موسى الدقاق (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن هارون الصوفي، قال: حدثنا أبو تراب عبيد الله بن موسى الروياني، عن عبد العظيم بن عبد الله الحسني، قال: قلت لابي جعفر محمد بن علي الرضا (عليه السلام): يا بن رسول الله، حدثني بحديث عن آبائك (عليهم السلام). فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): لا يزال الناس بخير ما تفاوتوا، فإذا استووا هلكوا. قال: قلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): لو تكاشفتم ما تدافنتم. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): إنكم لن تسعوا الناس بأموالكم، فسعوهم بطلاقة الوجه وحسن اللقاء، فإني سمعت رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) يقول: إنكم لن تسعوا الناس بأموالكم، فسعوهم بأخلاقكم. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): من عتب على الزمان طالت معتبته. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): مجالسة الاشرار تورث سوء الظن با لاخيار. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): بئس الزاد إلى المعاد العدوان على العباد. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن  آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): قيمة كل امرئ ما يحسنه. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): المرء مخبوء تحت لسانه. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): ما هلك أمرؤ عرف قدره. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): التدبير قبل العمل يؤمنك من الندم. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال يا أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): من وثق با لزمان صرع. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام) قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): خاطر بنفسه من استغنى برأيه. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): قلة العيال أحد اليسارين. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): من دخله العجب هلك. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): من أيقن بالخلف جاد بالعطية. قال: فقلت له: زدني يا بن رسول الله. فقال: حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): من رضي بالعافية ممن دونه، رزق السلامة ممن فوقه، قال: فقلت له: حسبني (1).

أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام

`Ali b. Ahmad b. Musa al-Daqqaq (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Harun al-Sufi narrated to us. He said: Abu Turab `Ubaydullah b. Musa al-Rawyani narrated to us from `Abd al-`Athim b. `Abdullah al-Hasani. He said: I said to Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Rida (as): O son of the Messenger of Allah! Narrate a hadith from your forefathers (as) to me.  So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather from his forefathers (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: The people will remain in goodness so long as there is variance. If they are equalized, they will be destroyed. He said: I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from his grandfather from his forefathers (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: Were the veil lifted from you, you would not [want to] be buried. He said: I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from his grandfather from his forefathers (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: You cannot attract the people with your wealth, so attract them with a friendly face and a beautiful meeting. Surely, I heard the Messenger of Allah (s) say: “Surely, you cannot attract the people with your wealth, so attract them with your character.” He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather from his forefathers (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: He who reprimands time will prolong his own reprimand. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather from his forefathers (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: Gathering with evil ones bequeaths having a negative impression of the chosen ones. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather from his forefathers (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: Animosity toward the servants [of Allah] is the worst provision for the Hereafter. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather from his forefathers (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: The worth of every person is in what improves him. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: A person is hidden beneath his tongue. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: No person who knows his value will be destroyed. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: Thinking before you act will safeguard you from regret. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: He who relies on time will struggle. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: He who only takes from his own opinion has brought risk upon himself. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: Having few dependants is a simplifier [of life]. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: He who is filled with pride is destroyed. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: He who is certain of the Hereafter is generous in giving. He said: So, I said to him: Tell me more, O son of the Messenger of Allah. So, he said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: He who wants wellness for those beneath him will be granted safety from those above him. He said: So, I said to him: This is sufficient for me.
