1 - حدثنا الشيخ الجليل أبو جعفر محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسى ابن بابويه القمي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثني أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه، عن الريان بن شبيب، قال: سمعت المأمون يقول: ما زلت أحب أهل البيت (عليهم السلام)، وأظهر للرشيد بغضهم تقربا إليه، فلما حج الرشيد كنت أنا ومحمد والقاسم معه، فلما كان بالمدينة استأذن عليه الناس، فكان آخر من أذن له موسى بن جعفر (عليهما السلام)، فدخل، فلما نظر إليه الرشيد تحرك ومد بصره وعنقه إليه حتى دخل البيت الذي كان فيه، فلما قرب منه جثا الرشيد على ركبتيه وعانقه، ثم أقبل عليه، فقال له: كيف أنت يا أبا الحسن، كيف عيالك، كيف عيال أبيك، كيف أنتم، ما حالكم؟ فما زال يسأله عن هذا وأبو الحسن (عليه السلام) يقول: خير خير، فلما قام أراد الرشيد أن ينهض، فأقسم عليه أبو الحسن (عليه السلام) فقعد، وعانقه وسلم عليه وودعه. قال المأمون: وكنت أجرأ ولد أبي عليه، فلما خرج أبو الحسن موسى بن جعفر (عليهما السلام) قلت لابي: يا أمير المؤمنين، لقد رأيتك عملت بهذا الرجل شيئا ما رأيتك فعلت بأحد من أبناء المهاجرين والانصار ولا ببني هاشم! فمن هذا الرجل؟ فقال: يا بني، هذا وارث علم النبيين، هذا موسى بن جعفر بن محمد، إن أردت العلم  الصحيح فعند هذا. قال المأمون: فحينئذ انغرس في قلبي حبهم (1).

فدخل...و أبو الحسن ع يقول

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (ra) narrated to us. He said: My father (rh) narrated to me. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from his father from al-Rayyan b. Shabib.
He said: I heard [the caliph] al-Ma’mun say: I always loved the Ahl al-Bayt (as), but I would show [the caliph Harun] al-Rashid hatred toward them as a means of becoming closer to him. Al-Rashid went for Hajj, and I, Muhammad, and al-Qasim were with him. When he was in Medina, the people sought permission to meet him. The last that he permitted [to visit] was Musa b. Ja`far (as). So, he entered. When al-Rashid looked at him, he stretched his sight and his neck toward him [in interest] until he entered the room that he was in. When he approached him, he fell to his knees and embraced him. Then, he kissed him and said to him: How are you Aba’l Hasan? How is your family? How is the family of your father? How are you all? What is your condition?
He did not stop asking this, while Abu’l Hasan (as) answered: Good, good. When he stood up, al-Rashid wanted to stand [out of respect for him], but Abu’l Hasan (as) swore [that he should remain seated], so he sat. Then, he embraced him, greeted him, and bid him farewell.
Al-Ma’mun said: I was the boldest son of my father toward him, so when Abu’l Hasan Musa b. Ja`far (as) left, I said to my father: O commander of the faithful! I have seen you behave toward this man in a way that you have not behaved with any of the descendants of the Muhajirin, Ansar, and Children of Hashim! So, who is this man? So, he said: O my son! This is the inheritor of the knowledge of the prophets. This is Musa b. Ja`far b. Muhammad. If you want correct knowledge, then it is with him.
Al-Ma’mun said: At that point, love for them was planted in my heart.

2 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه، عن الحسن بن علي بن يقطين، عن أخيه الحسين، عن أبيه علي بن يقطين، قال: رفع (2) الخبر إلى موسى بن جعفر (عليهما السلام)، وعنده جماعة من أهل بيته، بما عزم عليه موسى بن المهدي في أمره، فقال لاهل بيته: ما تشيرون؟ قالوا: نرى أن تتباعد عن هذا الرجل، وأن تغيب شخصك منه، فإنه لا يؤمن شره. فتبسم أبو الحسن (عليه السلام)، ثم قال: زعمت سخينة أن ستغلب ربها * * وليغلبن مغالب الغلاب (3) ثم رفع (عليه السلام) يده إلى السماء، فقال: إلهي، كم من عدو شحذ لي ظبة مديته (4)، وأرهف لي سنان حده، وداف لي قواتل سمومه، ولم تنم عني عين حراسته، فلما رأيت ضعفي عن احتمال الفوادح، وعجزي عن ملمات الجوائح (5)، صرفت ذلك عني بحولك وقوتك لا بحولي ولا بقوتي، فألقيته في الحفير الذي احتفره لي، خائبا مما أمله في دنياه، متباعدا مما رجاه في آخرته، فلك الحمد على ذلك قدر استحقاقك. سيدي اللهم فخذه بعزتك، وافلل حده عني بقدرتك، واجعل له شغلا فيما يليه، وعجزا عمن يناويه، اللهم وأعدني عليه عدوى (6) حاضرة، تكون من غيظي  شفاء، ومن حقي عليه وفاء (1)، وصل اللهم دعائي بالاجابة، وانظم شكاتي بالتغيير، وعرفه عما قليل ما وعدت الظالمين، وعرفني ما وعدت في إجابة المضطرين، إنك ذو الفضل العظيم والمن الكريم. قال: ثم تفرق القوم، فما اجتمعوا إلا لقراءة الكتاب الوارد بموت موسى بن المهدي (2).

...فتبسم أبو الحسن ع ثم فقال

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from his father from al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Yaqtin from his brother al-Husayn from his father `Ali b. Yaqtin. He said: The news came to Musa b. Ja`far (as) while he was with a group of his family that a plot by Musa b. al-Mahdi (the brother of Harun al-Rashid) was made against him. So, he said to his family: What do you think? They said: We believe that you should avoid this man and that you should hide yourself from him, for one cannot be safe from his evil. So, Abu’l Hasan (as) smiled and recited [a poem of Ka`b b. Malik]: Sakhina (Quraysh) thought that she could defeat her master, but the victors can be defeated. Then, he (as) raised his hand to the sky and said: My God! How many enemies sharpen their daggers for me, and pour deadly poison for me, with no eye sleeping away from me, watching? When You saw my weakness in withstanding calamity and my inability to act in poverty, You diverted all that from me by Your ability and Your power, not by my ability nor my power. You threw them in the ditch that they had dug out for me, as they are let down from what they hoped for in this world and are divergent from what they hoped for in the Hereafter. So, praise be to You – as much as You have the right to it – for this [blessing]. My Master, O Allah! Seize him, by Your glory, and make his dagger against me dull, by Your power. Make him busy running his own affairs and incapacitate him against his enemies. O Allah! Assist me against him now, so that it may be a remedy for my rage, and so that it may be a fulfillment of my right against him. O Allah! Connect my prayer with its acceptance and rearrange my complaints to [You] with change. Acquaint him with some of what You have promised the oppressors and acquaint me with the answer that You have promised the desperate. Surely, You are of great nobility and of benevolent blessing. He said: Then, he split away from the people. They were not reunited until the obituary of Musa b. al-Mahdi was read out [soon after that].

3 - حدثنا محمد بن علي ماجيلويه، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، قال: سمعت رجلا من أصحابنا يقول: لما حبس هارون الرشيد موسى بن جعفر (عليه السلام)، جن عليه الليل، فخاف ناحية هارون أن يقتله، فجدد موسى (عليه السلام) طهوره، واستقبل بوجهه القبلة، وصلى لله عز وجل أربع ركعات، ثم دعا بهذه الدعوات، فقال: يا سيدي نجني من حبس هارون، وخلصني من يديه، يا مخلص الشجر من بين رمل وطين وماء، ويا مخلص اللبن من بين فرث ودم، ويا مخلص الولد من بين مشيمة ورحم، ويا مخلص النار من بين الحديد والحجر، ويا مخلص الروح من بين الاحشاء والامعاء، خلصني من يدي هارون. قال: فلما دعا موسى (عليه السلام) بهذه الدعوات، رأى هارون رجلا أسود في منامه، وبيده سيف قد سله، واقفا على رأس هارون، وهو يقول: يا هارون، أطلق عن موسى بن جعفر وإلا ضربت علاوتك بسيفي هذا. فخاف هارون من هيبته، ثم دعا لحاجبه، فجاء الحاجب، فقال له: اذهب إلى السجن، وأطلق عن موسى بن جعفر. قال: فخرج الحاجب فقرع باب السجن، فأجابه صاحب السجن، فقال: من ذا؟ قال: إن الخليفة يدعو موسى بن جعفر، فأخرجه من سجنك، وأطلق عنه. فصاح السجان، يا موسى، إن الخليفة يدعوك. فقام موسى (عليه السلام) مذعورا فزعا، وهو  يقول: لا يدعوني في جوف هذه الليلة إلا لشر يريد بي. فقام باكيا حزينا مغموما آيسا من حياته، فجاء إلى عند هارون، وهو ترتعد فرائصه، فقال: سلام على هارون. فرد عليه السلام، ثم قال له هارون: ناشدتك بالله، هل دعوت في جوف هذه الليلة بدعوات؟ فقال: نعم. قال: وما هن؟ قال: جددت طهورا، وصليت لله عز وجل أربع ركعات، ورفعت طرفي إلى السماء، وقلت: يا سيدي خلصني من يدي هارون و شره، وذكر له ما كان من دعائه، فقال هارون: قد استجاب الله دعوتك. يا حاجب، أطلق عن هذا. ثم دعا بخلع فخلع عليه ثلاثا، وحمله على فرسه، وأكرمه، وصيره نديما لنفسه. ثم قال: هات الكلمات حتى أثبتها. ثم دعا بداوة وقرطاس، وكتب هذه الكلمات. قال: فأطلق عنه، وسلمه إلى حاجبه ليسلمه إلى الدار، فصار موسى بن جعفر (عليهما السلام) كريما شريفا عند هارون، وكان يدخل عليه في كل خميس (1).

رجلا من أصحابنا

يقول لما حبس هارون الرشيد

Muhammad b. `Ali Majiluwayh narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us. He said: I heard a man from our companions say: When Harun al-Rashid imprisoned Musa b. Ja`far (as), night befell him. He feared that Harun may kill him. So, Musa (as) renewed this purification, faced the qibla, prayed four voluntary units for Allah, then supplicated with this supplication: O my Master! Save me from the prison of Harun, and deliver me from his hands, O deliverer of the tree from the sand, clay, and water; O deliverer of milk from excretion and blood; O deliverer of the child from the placenta and the womb; O deliverer of fire from iron and stone; O deliverer of spirit from the intestines, deliver me from the hands of Harun. He said: When Musa (as) supplicated with this supplication, Harun saw a black man in his dream. In his hand was a sword as he stood over the head of Harun, as he was saying: “O Harun! Let Musa b. Ja`far go. If you don’t, then I will strike your neck with this sword.” So, Harun feared his awesome aura, and he called for his gatekeeper. When the gatekeeper came, he said to him: Go to the prison and free Musa b. Ja`far. So, the gatekeeper went to the gate of the prison and knocked on it. The warden answered him and said: Who is this? He said: Surely, the caliph is calling for Musa b. Ja`far, so free him from your prison. So, the warden yelled: O Musa! The caliph calls for you. So, Musa (as) stood suddenly, surprised and saying: He does not call for me tonight except to do an evil thing to me. So, he stood weeping, grieving, worried, and sorrowful about his life. He was taken to Harun shaking, so he said: Peace be to Harun (salam `ala harun). So, he responded, then Harun said to him: I adjure you by Allah, did you make any supplication in the middle of this night? So, he said: Yes. He said: What was it? He said: I renewed my purification, and I prayed four voluntary prayers for Allah, and I raised my sight to the sky, and I said: “O my Master! Deliver me from the hands of Harun and his evil”, and he mentioned what was left of his supplication. So, Harun said: Allah has answered your supplication. O gatekeeper, free him. Then, he called for a robe, and he put three robes onto him, and mounted him on his horse, and honoured him, and regretfully sent him off. Then, he said: Give me the words [to the supplication] so that I may memorize it. Then, he called for a tablet and wrote the words. He said: So, he sent him away, and he surrendered him to his gatekeeper so that he could send him to the house. So, Musa b. Ja`far (as) became honoured by Harun, and he would visit him every Thursday.

4 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا الحسين بن الحسن بن أبان، عن الحسين بن سعيد، عن ابن أبي عمير ومحمد بن إسماعيل، عن منصور بن يونس، عن منصور بن حازم، وعلي بن إسماعيل الميثمي، عن منصور بن حازم، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): لا رضاع بعد فطام، ولا وصال في صيام، ولا يتم بعد احتلام، ولا صمت يوم إلى الليل، ولا تعرب بعد الهجرة، ولا هجرة بعد الفتح، ولا طلاق قبل نكاح، ولا عتق قبل ملك، ولا يمين لولد مع والده، ولا لمملوك مع مولاه، ولا للمرأة مع زوجها، ولا نذر في معصية، ولا يمين في قطيعة (2).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. al-Hasan b. Aban narrated to us from al-Husayn b. Sa`id from Ibn Abi `Umayr and Muhammad b. Isma`il from Mansur b. Yunus from Mansur b. Hazim. And `Ali b. Isma`il al-Muthanna from Mansur b. Hazim from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq from his forefathers (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: There is no breastfeeding after weaning. There is no [validity in] continuous fasting. One who hits puberty cannot become an orphan. One cannot be silent from the day until the night. There is no nomadism after the hijra. There is no exodus after the conquest [of Mecca]. There is no divorce before marriage. There is no emancipation before ownership [of a slave]. There is no [validity in the] oath of sons regarding their fathers, slaves regarding their masters, nor wives regarding their husbands. There is no vow (nidhr) to do a sin. There is no [validity in the] oath in cutting [family] ties.

حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن مسرور (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا الحسين بن محمد بن عامر، عن عمه عبد الله بن عامر، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن أبان بن عثمان، عن أبان بن تغلب، عن أبي جعفر محمد بن علي الباقر، عن أبيه، عن جده (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): من أراد التوسل إلي، وأن يكون له عندي يد أشفع له بها يوم القيامة، فليصل أهل بيتي ويدخل السرور عليهم (1).

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masrur (ra) narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. `Amer narrated to us from his uncle `Abdullah b. `Amer from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Aban b. `Uthman from Aban b. Taghlub from Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir from his father from his grandfather (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Whoever wants a way (tawassul) to me and wants my hand in his intercession on the Day of Resurrection should connect with my Ahl al-Bayt and bring joy to them.

6 - حدثنا الحسين بن أحمد بن إدريس (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثني أبي، قال: حدثني أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن عبد الله ابن الحسن بن الحسن بن علي، عن أبيه، عن جده، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): من قال: صلى الله على محمد وآله، قال الله جل جلاله: صلى الله عليك، فليكثر من ذلك. ومن قال: صلى الله على محمد، ولم يصل على آله، لم يجد ريح الجنة، وريحها توجد من مسيرة خمسمائة عام (2).

Al-Husayn b. Ahmad b. Idris (ra) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid narrated to me from his father from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from `Abdullah b. al-Hasan b. al-Hasan b. `Ali from his father from his grandfather. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Whoever blesses Muhammad and his family, Allah says: “Allah blesses you”; so, he should increase in [saying] that. Whoever says: “may Allah bless Muhammad” and does not bless his family will not find the fragrance of Paradise; and its fragrance could be found at the travel distance of five hundred years away.

7 - حدثنا علي بن أحمد بن عبد الله بن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، قال: حدثني أبي، عن جده أحمد بن أبي عبد الله، قال: حدثنا أبي، عن علي بن النعمان، عن فضل بن يونس، عن عبد الله بن سنان، قال: قال أبو عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام): من قال كل يوم خمسا وعشرين مرة: اللهم اغفر للمؤمنين والمؤمنات والمسلمين والمسلمات، كتب الله له بعدد كل مؤمن مضى، وبعدد كل مؤمن بقي إلى يوم القيامة حسنة، ومحا عنه سيئة، ورفع له درجة (3).

`Ali b. Ahmad b. `Abdullah b. Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me from his grandfather Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah. He said: My father narrated to me from `Ali b. al-Nu`man from Fadl b. Yunus from `Abdullah b. Sinan. He said: Abu `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) said: Whoever says: “O Allah! Forgive the believing men and women, and the Muslim men and women (Allahummaghfir lil mu’minin wal mu’minat wal muslimin wal muslimat)” twenty-five times in a day, Allah will record [a reward] for every believer that has passed and every believer that will remain until the Day of Resurrection, and He will erase a sin from him, and elevate him by a degree.

8 - وبهذا الاسناد، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن سنان، عن عمر بن يزيد، قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام) يقول: من قدم أربعين رجلا من إخوانه قبل أن يدعو لنفسه، استجيب له فيهم وفي نفسه (4).

يقول

And by this isnad. From Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah from his father from Muhammad b. Sinan from `Umar b. Yazid. He said: I heard Aba `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) say: Whoever prays for forty of his brethren before he prays for himself, it will be granted for them and for him.

- حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن  يحيى العطار، عن محمد بن أحمد بن يحيى بن عمران الاشعري، عن محمد بن عيسى بن عبيد، عن سليمان بن رشيد، عن أبيه، عن معاوية بن عمار، قال: ذكرت عند أبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام) بعض الانبياء، فصليت عليه، فقال: إذا ذكر أحد من الانبياء فابدأ بالصلاة على محمد ثم عليه (صلى الله على محمد وآله، وعلى جميع الانبياء) (1).

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us from Muhammad b. Ahmad b. Yahya b. `Imran al-Ash`ari from Muhammad b. `Isa b. `Ubayd from Sulayman b. Rashid from his father from Mu`awiya b. `Ammar. He said: I mentioned one of the prophets in the presence of Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as), and I blessed him, so he said: When one of the prophets is mentioned, then begin with blessing Muhammad, then him. (May the blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad and his Family, and upon all the prophets)

10 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن أبي القاسم، عن محمد بن علي الصيرفي، عن محمد بن سنان، عن المفضل بن عمر، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق، عن أبيه، عن جده (عليهم السلام)، قال: بلغ أم سلمة زوجة النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) أن مولى لها يتنقص عليا (عليه السلام) ويتناوله، فأرسلت إليه، فلما أن صار إليها قالت له: يا بني، بلغني أنك تتنقص عليا وتتناوله. قال لها: نعم، يا أماه. قالت: اقعد ثكلتك أمك حتى أحدثك بحديث سمعته من رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)، ثم اختر لنفسك، إنا كنا عند رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) تسع نسوة، وكانت ليلتي ويومي من رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) فدخل النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) وهو متهلل (2)، أصابعه في أصابع علي، واضعا يده عليه، فقال: يا أم سلمة، اخرجي من البيت، وأخليه لنا، فخرجت واقبلا يتناجيان، اسمع الكلام، وما أدري ما يقولان، حتى إذا انتصف النهار، أتيت الباب، فقلت: أدخل يا رسول الله؟ قال: لا. فكبوت كبوة شديدة مخافة أن يكون ردني من سخطة، أو نزل في شئ من السماء، ثم لم ألبث أن أتيت الباب الثانية، فقلت: أدخل يا رسول الله؟ فقال: لا. فكبوت كبوة أشد من الاولى. ثم لم ألبث حتى أتيت الباب الثالثة، فقلت: أدخل يا رسول الله؟ فقال: ادخلي يا أم سلمة. فدخلت وعلي (عليه السلام) جاث بين يديه، وهو يقول: فداك أبي وأمي يا رسول الله، إذا كان كذا وكذا فما تأمرني؟ قال: آمرك بالصبر. ثم أعاد عليه القول الثانية، فأمره بالصبر، فأعاد عليه القول الثالثة، فقال له: يا علي يا أخي، إذا كان ذاك منهم فسل  سيفك، وضعه على عاتقك، واضرب به قدما قدما (1)، حتى تلقاني وسيفك شاهر يقطر من دمائهم، ثم التفت (عليه السلام) إلي، فقال لي: ما هذا الكآبة يا أم سلمة؟ قلت: للذي كان من ردك لي يا رسول الله. فقال لي: والله ما رددتك من موجدة (2)، وإنك لعلى خير من الله ورسوله، لكن أتيتني وجبرئيل عن يميني، وعلي عن يساري، وجبرئيل يخبرني بالاحداث التي تكون من بعدي، وأمرني أن أوصي بذلك عليا. يا أم سلمة، اسمعي واشهدي، هذا علي بن أبي طالب، أخي في الدنيا وأخي في الآخرة. يا أم سلمة، اسمعي واشهدي، هذا علي بن أبي طالب، وزيري في الدنيا ووزيري في الآخرة. يا أم سلمة، اسمعي واشهدي، هذا علي بن أبي طالب، حامل لوائي في الدنيا وحامل لوائي غدا في القيامة. يا أم سلمة، اسمعي واشهدي، هذا علي بن أبي طالب، وصيي وخليفتي من بعدي، وقاضي عداتي، والذائد عن حوضي، يا أم سلمة، اسمعي واشهدي، هذا علي بن أبي طالب، سيد المسلمين، وإمام المتقين، وقائد الغر المحجلين، وقاتل الناكثين والقاسطين والمارقين. قلت: يا رسول الله، من الناكثون؟ قال: الذين يبايعونه بالمدينة، وينكثون بالبصرة. قلت: من القاسطون؟ قال: معاوية وأصحابه من أهل الشام. قلت: من المارقون؟ قال: أصحاب النهروان. فقال مولى أم سلمة: فرجت عني فرج الله عنك، والله لا سببت عليا أبدا (3).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi’l Qasim narrated to us from Muhammad b. `Ali al-Sayrafi from Muhammad b. Sinan from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq from his father from his grandfather (as). He said: Umm Salama the wife of the Prophet (s) was informed that a servant of hers had lowered the status of `Ali (as) and taunted him. So, she sent for him. When he came to her, she said to him: O my son! I was informed that you lower the status of `Ali and taunt him. He said to her: Yes, mother. She said: Sit – may your mother be bereaved with you – so that I could narrate a hadith to you that I heard from the Messenger of Allah (s). Then, decide for yourself. We were nine women with the Messenger of Allah (s), and it was my night and my day with the Messenger of Allah (s). So, the Prophet (s) entered, and his fingers were intertwined with the fingers of `Ali – he was placing his hand on him. So, he said: O Umm Salama! Exit the house and leave it for us. So, I left, and they began whispering [to one another]. I heard the discussion, but I could not make out what they were saying. When it became midday, I went to the door, and I said: Shall I enter, O Messenger of Allah? He said: No. I was saddened, fearing that he had turned me away out of anger, or that something had been revealed from heaven. I did not remain except that I came to the door a second time, and I said: Shall I enter, O Messenger of Allah? So, he said: No. So, I became even more saddened than the first time. Then, I did not remain except that I came to the door a third time, and I said: Shall I enter, O Messenger of Allah? So, he said: Enter, Umm Salama. So, I entered, and `Ali (as) was kneeling in front of him, saying: May my mother and my father be your sacrifice, O Messenger of Allah! If such-and-such were to happen, then what do you command me to do? He said: I command you to be patient. Then, he repeated the saying a second time, and he commanded him to be patient. Then, he repeated the saying a third time, so he said to him: O `Ali, O my brother! If they do that, then unsheathe your sword, place it on your shoulders, and strike before you again and again until you meet me and your sword is dripping in their blood. Then, he (as) turned to me and said to me: Why are you sad, Umm Salama? I said: Because you were turning me away, O Messenger of Allah. So, he said to me: By Allah, I did not turn you away out of anger. Surely, you are upon goodness from Allah and His Messenger. Rather, you came to me while Gabriel was on my right and `Ali was on my left. Gabriel was informing me of what will occur after me, and he commanded me to impart that to `Ali. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is my brother in this world and my brother in the Hereafter. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is my vizier in this world and my vizier in the Hereafter. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is the one that holds my banner in this world and the one who will hold my banner anon in the Resurrection. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is my deputy and my vicegerent (khalifa) after me. He is my judge of my articles and the defender of my Pond. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is the Master of the Muslims, the Imam of the Godfearing, the Leader of the shining believers, and the killer of the oath breakers, the deviators, and the apostates. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Who are the oath breakers? He said: Those who pledge allegiance to him in Medina and betray him in Basra. I said: Who are the deviators? He said: Mu`awiya and his companions from the people of the Levant. I said: Who are the apostates? He said: The people of Nahrawan. So, the servant of Umm Salama said: You have relieved me, may Allah relieve you. By Allah, I will never insult `Ali.

11 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا علي بن الحسين السعد آبادي، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن سنان، عن أبي الجارود زياد بن المنذر، عن القاسم بن الوليد، عن شيخ من ثمالة، قال: دخلت على امرأة من تميم عجوز كبيرة وهي تحدث الناس، فقلت لها: يرحمك الله، حدثيني في بعض فضائل أمير المؤمنين علي (عليه السلام). قالت: أحدثك وهذا شيخ كما ترى بين يدي نائم. فقلت لها: ومن هذا؟ فقالت: أبو الحمراء، خادم رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله). فجلست إليه، فلما سمع حسي استوى جالسا، فقال: مه. فقلت: رحمك الله، حدثني بما رأيت من رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) يصنعه بعلي (عليه السلام)، فإن الله يسألك عنه. فقال: على الخبير وقعت، أما ما رأيت النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) يصنعه بعلي (عليه السلام)، فإنه قال: لي ذات يوم: يا أبا الحمراء، انطلق فادع لي مائة من العرب، وخمسين رجلا من العجم، وثلاثين رجلا من القبط، وعشرين رجلا من الحبشة. فأتيت بهم، فقام رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) فصف العرب، ثم صف العجم خلف العرب، وصف القبط خلف العجم، وصف الحبشة خلف القبط، ثم قام فحمد الله وأثنى عليه، ومجد الله بتمجيد لم يسمع الخلائق بمثله، ثم قال: يا معشر العرب والعجم والقبط والحبشة، أقررتم بشهادة أن لا إله إلا الله، وحده لا شريك له، وأن محمدا عبده ورسوله؟ فقالوا: نعم. فقال: اللهم أشهد. حتى قالها ثلاثا، فقال في الثلاثة: أقررتم بشهادة أن لا إله إلا الله، وأني محمدا عبده ورسوله، وأن علي بن أبي طالب أمير المؤمنين وولي أمرهم من بعدي، فقالوا: اللهم نعم. فقال: اللهم أشهد. حتى قالها ثلاثا. ثم قال لعلي (عليه السلام): يا أبا الحسن، انطلق فأتني بصحيفة ودواة، فدفعها إلى علي بن أبي طالب، وقال: اكتب. فقال: وما أكتب؟ قال: اكتب بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم، هذا ما أقرت به العرب والعجم والقبط والحبشة، أقروا بشهادة أن لا إله إلا الله، وأن محمدا عبده ورسوله، وأن علي بن أبي طالب أمير المؤمنين وولي أمرهم من بعدي، ثم ختم الصحيفة، ودفعها إلى علي (عليه السلام) فما رأيتها إلى الساعة. فقلت: رحمك الله. زدني. فقال: نعم، خرج علينا رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) يوم عرفة، وهو آخذ بيد علي (عليه السلام)، فقال: يا معشر الخلائق، إن الله تبارك وتعالى باهى بكم في هذا اليوم ليغفر لكم عامة، ثم التفت إلى علي (عليه السلام)، فقال له: وغفر لك - يا علي - خاصة. ثم قال (صلى الله عليه وآله): يا علي ادن مني. فدنا منه، فقال: إن السعيد حق السعيد من أحبك وأطاعك، وإن الشقي كل الشقي من عاداك ونصب لك وأبغضك. يا علي، كذب من زعم أنه يحبني ويبغضك. يا علي، من حاربك فقد حاربني، ومن حاربني فقد حارب الله عز وجل. يا علي، من أبغضك فقد أبغضني، ومن أبغضني، ومن أبغضني فقد أبغض الله، وأتعس الله جده، وأدخله نار جهنم (1).

Muhammad b. Masrur b. al-Mutawakkil (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi from his father from Muhammad b. Sinan from Abi'l Jarud Ziyad b. al-Mundhir from al-Qasim b. al-Walid from a shaykh from Thumala. He said: I visited an old lady from Tamim, who was narrating to the people. So, I said to her: May Allah have mercy on you. Narrate some of the virtues of Amir al-Mu'minin `Ali (as) to me. She said: You want me to narrate to you while this elder is sleeping right in front of you? So, I said to her: Who is this? So, she said: Abu Hamra', the servant of the Messenger of Allah (s). So, she sat by him, and when he sensed me, he awoke and sat up. So, he said: What? So, she said: May Allah have mercy on you. Narrate to me about what you have seen the Messenger of Allah (s) do with `Ali (as), for Allah will ask you about it. So, he said: You have come across an informed one. As for what I've seen the Messenger of Allah (s) do with `Ali (as), he said to me one day: O Aba'l Hamra’! Go and get me one hundred Arabs, fifty non-Arab men, thirty Coptic men, and twenty Abyssinian men. So, I brought them, so the Messenger of Allah (s) put the Arabs in a row, then put the non-Arabs in a row behind the Arabs, then put the Copts in a row behind the non-Arabs, then put the Abyssinians in a row behind the Copts. Then, he stood, praised and commended Allah, and glorified Allah in a way that had never been heard from the creatures. Then, he said: O Arabs, non-Arabs, Copts, and Abyssinians! Have you declared that there is no god but Allah, one without partners, and that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger? So, they said: Yes. So, he said: O Allah, bear witness. He repeated this three times, and the third time he said: Have you declared that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger, and that `Ali b. Abi Talib is the Commander of the Faithful and the Master of their Affair after me? So, they said: O Allah, yes. So, he said: O Allah, bear witness. He said this three times. Then, he said to `Ali (as): O Aba'l Hasan! Go and bring me a pen and paper. So, he gave them to `Ali b. Abi Talib and said: Write. So, he said: What should I write? He said: Write: “In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. This is what the Arabs, the non-Arabs, the Copts, and the Abyssinians have declared. They have declared that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger, and that `Ali b. Abi Talib is the Commander of the Faithful and the Master of their Affair after me.” Then, he put his seal on the paper, and he gave it to `Ali (as). I did not see it afterwards. So, I said: May Allah have mercy on you. Increase for me. So, he said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah (s) came out to us on the Day of `Arafa, while he was holding the hand of `Ali (as), so he said: O creatures! Allah is boasting that He will forgive you all today. Then, he looked to `Ali (as) and said to him: And he has forgiven you, `Ali, especially. Then, he (s) said: O `Ali! Come closer to me. So, he came closer to him. Then, he said: He who is most rightfully happy is the one who loves you and obeys you. He who is most rightfully wretched is the one who opposes you and hates you. O `Ali! Whoever wars against you wars against me, and whoever wars against me wars against Allah. O `Ali! Whoever hates you has hated me, and whoever hates me has hated Allah. Allah makes his grandfather miserable (?) and makes him enter the Fire of Hell.
