/ 1 - حدثنا الشيخ الفقيه أبو جعفر محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسى ابن بابويه القمي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن أبي عبد الله، قال: حدثنا أبي، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن مالك بن أنس، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، عن علي (عليه السلام)، قال: جاء الفقراء إلى رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)، فقالوا: يا رسول الله، إن للاغنياء ما يعتقون به وليس لنا، ولهم ما يحجون به وليس لنا، ولهم ما يتصدقون به وليس لنا، ولهم ما يجاهدون به وليس لنا. فقال (صلى الله عليه وآله): من كبر الله تبارك وتعالى مائة مرة كان أفضل من عتق مائة رقبة، ومن سبح الله مائة مرة كان أفضل من سياق مائة بدنة، ومن حمد الله مائة مرة كان أفضل من حملان مائة فرس في سبيل الله بسرجها ولجمها وركبها، ومن قال: لا إله إلا الله مائة مرة كان أفضل الناس عملا ذلك اليوم إلا من زاد. قال: فبلغ ذلك الاغنياء فصنعوه، قال: فعادوا إلى النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله)، فقالوا: يا رسول الله، قد بلغ الاغنياء ما قلت فصنعوه. فقال (صلى الله عليه وآله): ذلك فضل الله يؤتيه من يشاء (1).

...فقال

Muhammad b. Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Abi `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from Muhammad b. Abi Umayr from Malik b. Anas from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers (as) from `Ali (as). He said: The poor came to the Messenger of Allah (s) and said: O Messenger of Allah! The rich have those who they could emancipate, and we do not. They have that which they could use for pilgrimages, and we do not. They have that which they could give in charity, and we do not. They have that which they could use for jihad, and we do not. So, the Messenger of Allah (s) said: "Exalting Allah (takbir) one hundred times is better than freeing one hundred slaves. Glorifying Allah (subhanallah) one hundred times is better than sacrificing one hundred camels. Praising Allah (alhamdulillah) one hundred times is better than supplying one hundred readied horses with a horseman going in the cause of Allah. Whomever says: "there is no god except Allah" (la ilaha illallah) one hundred times, he will be the better than the people in deeds that day, except he who exceeds him. So, the rich were told about that, and they began practicing it. So, the poor returned to the Prophet (s) and said: O Messenger of Allah! The rich were told about what you had said, and they began practicing it. So, he (s) said: That is the virtue of Allah, which He gives to whomever He pleases.

2 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، قال: حدثنا أبو طالب عبد الله بن الصلت القمي، قال حدثنا يونس بن عبد الرحمن، عن عاصم بن حميد، عن محمد بن قيس، عن أبي جعفر محمد بن علي الباقر (عليهما السلام)، قال: إن اسم رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) في صحف إبراهيم: الماحي، وفي توراة موسى: الحاد، وفي إنحيل عيسى: أحمد، وفي الفرقان: محمد. قيل: فما تأويل الماحي؟ فقال: الماحي صورة الاصنام، وماحي الاوثان والازلام وكل معبود دون الرحمن. قيل: فما تأويل الحاد قال: يحاد من حاد الله ودينه، قريبا كان أو بعيدا. قيل: فما تأويل أحمد؟ قال: حسن ثناء الله عزوجل عليه في الكتب بما حمد من أفعاله. قيل: فما تأويل محمد؟ قال: إن الله وملائكته وجميع أنبيائه ورسله وجميع أممهم يحمدونه ويصلون عليه، وإن اسمه لمكتوب على العرش: محمد رسول الله. وكان (صلى الله عليه وآله) يلبس من القلانس اليمنية والبيضاء والمضربة (2) ذات الاذنين في الحرب، وكانت له عنزة (3) يتكئ عليها ويخرجها في العيدين، فيخطب بها، وكان له قضيب يقال له الممشوق، وكان له فسطاط يسمى الكن، وكانت له قصعة تسمى المنبعة (4)، وكان له قعب (5) يسمى الري، وكان له فرسان، يقال لاحدهما: المرتجز، وللآخر: السكب، وكانت له بغلتان، يقال لاحدهما: دلدل، وللاخرى: الشهباء، وكانت له ناقتان، يقال لاحدهما: العضباء، وللاخرى: الجدعاء، وكان له سيفان، يقال لاحدهما: ذو الفقار، وللآخر: العون، وكان له سيفان آخران، يقال لاحدهما: المخذم، وللآخر: الرسوم (1)، وكان له حمار يسمى يعفور، وكانت له عمامة تسمى السحاب، وكانت له درع تسمى ذات الفضول، لها ثلاث حلقات فضة: حلقة بين يديها، وحلقتان خلفها، وكانت له راية تسمى العقاب، وكان له بعير يحمل عليه يقال له: الديباج، وكان له لواء يسمى المعلوم، وكان له مغفر يقال له: الاسعد. فسلم ذلك كله إلى علي (عليه السلام) عند موته، وأخرج خاتمه وجعله في إصبعه، فذكر علي (عليه السلام) أنه وجد في قائمة سيف من سيوفه (صلى الله عليه وآله) صحيفة فيها ثلاثة أحرف: صل من قطعك، وقل الحق ولو على نفسك، وأحسن إلى من أساء إليك (2). قال: وقال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): خمس لا أدعهن حتى الممات: الاكل على الحضيض مع العبيد، وركوبي الحمار مؤكفا (3)، وحلبي العنز بيدي، ولبس الصوف، والتسليم على الصبيان لتكون سنة من بعدي (4).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (rh) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us. He said: Abu Talib `Abdullah b. al-Salt al-Qummi narrated to us. He said: Yunus b. `Abd al-Rahman narrated to us from Asim b. Hamid from Muhammad b. Qays from Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir (as). He said: Surely, the name of the Messenger of Allah (s) in the Scrolls of Ibrahim is the Effacer (al-Mahi). In the Torah of Musa, it is the Adversary (al-Had). In the Gospel of Jesus, it is the Praised One (Ahmad). In the Criterion, it is Muhammad. It was said: What is the meaning of the Effacer? So, he said: The one who effaces the images on statues, the idols, the divining arrows, and everything that is worshiped besides the Merciful. It was said: What is the meaning of the Adversary? He said: He is the adversary of those who oppose Allah and His religion, near or far. It was said: What is the meaning of the Praised One? He said: The beauty of Allah's attestation to his praiseworthy actions, as described in the scriptures. It was said: What is the meaning of Muhammad? He said: Allah, His angels, all His prophets and messengers, and all their nations praise him and send blessings on him. The name of his that is written on the Throne is "Muhammad the Messenger of Allah."  He (s) would wear white Yemenite skullcaps and a shield with two handles during wartime. He had a staff that he would lean on; and he would take it out during the two Eids and lecture with it. He had a spear that was called “the Unsheathed”. He had a house made of hair that was named “the Resting Place”. He had a cup that was named “the Fountain”. He had a vessel named “the Irrigator”. He had two horses; one was called “the Chastiser” and the other was called “the Outpourer”. He had two mules; one was called “Porcupine (Duldul)” and the other was called “One with Black and White Hair (al-Shahba’)”. He had two she-camels; one was called “the Muscular” and the other was called “the Malnourished”. He had two swords; one was called “the Bifurcator (Dhulfiqar)” and the other was called “the Helper”. He had two other swords; one was called “the Striker” and the other was called “the Drawing” (al-rusum; in another book, “the Nullifier” al-rasub). He had a donkey named “the Child of a Wild Cow (al-Ya`fur)”. He had a turban named “the Cloud”. He had a shield named “the Virtuous” – it had three silver rings: a ring in the front, and two rings in the back. He had a flag named “the Punishment”. He had a packing-camel called “Brocade”. He had a banner named “the Known”. He had chainmail named “the Happiest”. He gave all of that to `Ali (as) at his death. He took off his ring and put it on his finger. So, `Ali (as) remembered that he had found a sword from his (s) swords with a parchment in it. It had three phrases: “Pray for those who cut you off. Speak the truth, even if it is against yourself. Be good to those who do evil to you.” He said: And the Messenger of Allah (s) said: There are five things that I will not abandon until death: (1) Eating whilst sitting on the hard ground with slaves. (2) Riding donkeys without saddles. (3) Milking goats by hand. (4) Wearing wool. (5) Greeting young boys, so that it may be a tradition after me.

3 - حدثنا أحمد بن زياد الهمداني، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه، عن الريان بن الصلت، قال: دخلت على علي بن موسى الرضا (عليه السلام)، فقلت له: يا بن رسول الله، إن الناس يقولون: إنك قبلت ولاية العهد مع إظهارك الزهد في الدنيا! فقال (عليه السلام): قد علم الله كراهتي لذلك، فلما خيرت بين قبول ذلك وبين القتل اخترت القبول على القتل، ويحهم أما علموا أن يوسف (عليه السلام) كان نبيا رسولا، فلما دفعته الضرورة إلى تولي خزائن العزيز قال له:  اجعلني على خزائن الارض إني حفيظ عليم، ودفعتني الضرورة إلى قبول ذلك على إكراه وإجبار بعد الاشراف على الهلاك، على أني ما دخلت في هذا الامر إلا دخول خارج منه، فإلى الله المشتكى وهو المستعان (1).

Ahmad b. Ziyad al-Hamadani narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim from his father from al-Rayyan b. al-Salt. He said: I visited `Ali b. Musa al-Rida (as) and I said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah! The people say: “You accepted the position of crown prince whilst you present yourself as being ascetic in this world!” So, he (as) said: Allah knows my dislike for that. When I was made to choose between accepting that and being killed, I chose to accept rather than to be killed. Woe to them! Do they not know that Yusuf (as) was a prophet and messenger, and yet when necessity prompted him to take over the treasuries of al-`Aziz, he said to him: “Appoint me over the treasuries of the land. Surely, I will be a knowledgeable guardian.” (12:55) The necessity prompted me to accept that begrudgingly, by force, at threat of destruction. I did not enter this affair except as one who wants to leave it. I complain to Allah, for He is the Helper.

4 - حدثنا محمد بن إبراهيم بن إسحاق (رحمه الله)، قال: أخبرنا أحمد بن محمد الهمداني، عن علي بن الحسن بن علي بن فضال، عن أبيه، قال: قال الرضا (عليه السلام): من تذكر مصابنا وبكى لما ارتكب منا كان معنا في درجتنا يوم القيامة، ومن ذكر بمصابنا فبكى وأبكى لم تبك عينه يوم تبكي العيون، ومن جلس مجلسا يحيى فيه أمرنا لم يمت قلبه يوم تموت القلوب (2).

الرضا عليه السلام

Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq (rh) narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Hamadani (rh) informed us from `Ali b. al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Faddal from his father. He said: Al-Rida (as) said: Whoever recalls our tragedy and weeps when he commits to us will be with us in our rank on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever recalls our tragedy, weeps, and makes others weep, his eye will not weep on the Day that the eyes will weep. Whoever partakes in a gathering in which our affair is revived, his heart will not die on the Day that the hearts will die.

5 - قال: وقال الرضا (عليه السلام) في قول الله عزوجل: (إن أحسنتم أحسنتم لانفسكم وإن أسأتم فلها) (3) رب يغفر لها (4).

He said: Al-Rida (as) said, regarding the saying of Allah, “If you do good, you do good for yourselves; and if you do evil, [you do it against] yourself.” (17:7) [There is a] Lord that could forgive it.

6 - قال وقال الرضا (عليه السلام) في قول الله عزوجل: (فاصفح الصفح الجميل) (5)، قال: العفو من غير عتاب (6).

And al-Rida (as) said, regarding the saying of Allah, “So, overlook with gracious forgiveness” (15:85). He said: Forgiveness without reproach.

7 - قال: وقال الرضا (عليه السلام) في قول الله عزوجل: (هو الذي يريكم البرق خوفا وطمعا (7)، قال: خوفا للمسافر، وطمعا للمقيم (8).

And al-Rida (as) said, regarding the saying of Allah, “It is He who shows you lightning in both fear and hope.” (13:12) He said: Fear for the traveller, and hope for the settler.

8 - قال: وقال الرضا (عليه السلام): من لم يقدر على ما يكفر به ذنوبه فليكثر من الصلاة على محمد وآله، فإنها تهدم الذنوب هدما (9).

He said: And al-Rida (as) said: Whoever does not know how to expiate his sins should increase in sending blessings upon Muhammad and his Family, for this thoroughly destroys sins.

9 - وقال (عليه السلام): الصلاة على محمد وآله تعدل عند الله عزوجل التسبيح والتهليل والتكبير (1).

And he (as) said: To Allah, sending blessings upon Muhammad and his Family is equal to glorification (tasbih), pronouncing His oneness (tahlil), and exaltation (takbir).

10 - حدثنا أحمد بن الحسن القطان، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن يحيى بن زكريا القطان، قال: حدثنا بكر بن عبد الله بن حبيب، قال: حدثنا علي بن زياد، قال: حدثنا الهيثم بن عدي، عن الاعمش، عن يونس بن أبي إسحاق، قال: حدثنا أبو الصقر، عن عدي بن أرطاة، قال: قال معاوية يوما لعمرو بن العاص: يا أبا عبد الله، أينا أدهى؟ قال عمرو: أنا للبديهة، وأنت للروية. قال معاوية: قضيت لي على نفسك، وأنا أدهى منك في البديهة. قال عمرو: فأين كان دهاؤك يوم رفعت المصاحف؟ قال: بها غلبتني يا أبا عبد الله، أفلا أسألك عن شئ تصدقني فيه؟ قال: والله إن الكذب لقبيح، فسل عما بدا لك أصدقك. فقال: هل غششتني منذ نصحتني؟ قال: لا. قال: بلى والله، لقد غششتني، أما إني لا أقول في كل المواطن، ولكن في موطن واحد، قال: وأي موطن هذا؟ قال: يوم دعاني علي بن أبي طالب للمبارزة فاستشرتك، فقلت: ما ترى يا أبا عبد الله؟ فقلت: كفؤ كريم، فأشرت علي بمبارزته وأنت تعلم من هو، فعلمت أنك غششتني. قال: يا أمير المومنين، دعاك رجل إلى مبارزته عظيم الشرف جليل الخطر، فكنت من مبارزته على إحدى الحسنيين، إما أن تقتله فتكون قد قتلت قتال الاقران، وتزداد به شرفا إلى شرفك وتخلو بملكك، وإما أن تعجل إلى مرافقة الشهداء والصالحين وحسن أولئك رفيقا. قال معاوية: هذه شر من الاول، والله إني لاعلم أني لو قتلته دخلت النار، ولو قتلني دخلت النار. قال له عمرو: فما حملك على قتاله؟! قال: الملك عقيم، ولن يسمعها مني  أحد بعدك (1).

Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qattan narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Yahya b. Zakariyya al-Qattan. He said: Bakr b. `Abdullah b. Habib narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ziyad narrated to us. He said: Al-Haytham b. `Adi narrated to us from al-A`mash from Yunus b. Abi Ishaq. He said: Abu al-Asqar narrated to us from `Adi b. Arta. He said: Mu`awiya said one day to `Amr b. al-`As: O Aba `Abdillah! Which of us is worse? `Amr said: I am [worse] in [my] impulsiveness, and you are [worse] in [your] scheming. Mu`awiya said: You have put me over yourself when I am worse than you in impulsiveness. `Amr said: Where was your slyness on the day you raised the codices (al-masahif)? He said: With this you have overcome me, O Aba `Abdillah. Shall I not ask you about something regarding which you will agree with me? He said: By Allah, lying would be repugnant, so ask what you wish me to agree with. So, he said: Did you cheat me when you advised me? He said: No. He said: Rather, by Allah, you did cheat me – I am not saying in all instances, but in one particular instance. He said: In what instance was this? He said: The day `Ali b. Abi Talib challenged me to a duel, and I sought your advice; I said: “What do you think, O Aba `Abdillah?” So, you said: “It would be honourable.” So, you advised me to duel him whilst you knew who he was; so, then I knew that you had cheated me. He said: O commander of the faithful! A man challenged you to duel him with great honour and great danger. Had you dueled him you would have achieved any of two good outcomes. Either you would have killed him, which would have been the killing of the ages, by which you would have increased in honour and have been free to rule, or you would have accompanied the martyrs and the righteous, which would have been the best of company. Mu`awiya said: This [second outcome] is worse than the first. By Allah, I surely know that, had I killed him, I would have gone to the Fire; and had he killed me, I would have gone to the Fire. `Amr said to him: So, what caused you to go and fight against him? He said: Rulership has no blood bonds; and no one will hear this from me after you.

- حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن مسرور (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا الحسين بن محمد بن عامر، عن عمه عبد الله بن عامر، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن أبان بن عثمان، عن أبان بن تغلب، عن عكرمة، عن ابن عباس، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): من دان بديني وسلك منهاجي واتبع سنتي، فليدن بتفضيل الائمة من أهل بيتي على جميع امتي، فإن مثلهم في هذه الامة مثل باب حطة في بني إسرائيل (2).

فأخبره

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masrur (rh) narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. `Amer narrated to us from his uncle `Abdullah b. `Amer from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Aban b. `Uthman rom Aban b. Taghlub from `Ikrama from Ibn `Abbas. He said: The Messenger o Allah (s) said: Whoever takes on my religion, travels my path, and follows my tradition should prefer the Imams of my Ahl al-Bayt over the rest of my Nation, for their likeness in my Nation is like that of the Gate of Remission for the Children of Israel.

12 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن أحمد بن علي بن الصلت، عن عمه عبد الله بن الصلت، عن يونس بن عبد الرحمن، عن عمرو بن شمر، عن جابر بن يزيد الجعفي، عن أبي جعفر محمد بن علي الباقر (عليه السلام)، قال: أوحى الله عزوجل إلى رسوله (صلى الله عليه وآله): أني شكرت لجعفر بن أبي طالب أربع خصال، فدعاه النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) فأخبره، فقال: لو لا أن الله أخبرك ما أخبرتك، ما شربت خمرا قط، لاني علمت أن لو شربتها زال عقلي، وما كذبت قط، لان الكذب ينقص (3) المروءة، وما زنيت قط، لاني خفت أني إذا عملت عمل بي، وما عبدت صنما قط لاني علمت أنه لا يضر ولا ينفع. قال: فضرب النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) يده على عاتقه، فقال: حق لله عزوجل أن يجعل لك جناحين تطير بهما مع الملائكة في الجنة (4).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Ahmad b. `Ali b. al-Salt narrated to us from his uncle `Abdullah b. al-Salt from Yunus b. `Abd al-Rahman from `Amr b. Shimr from Jabir b. Yazid al-Ju`fi from Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir (as). He said: Allah revealed to His Messenger (s): I have thanked Ja`far b. Abi Talib for four characteristics. So, the Prophet (s) called for him and informed him. So, he said: Had Allah not informed you, I would not have informed you: (1) I have never drank wine, because I know that if I were to drink it, my intellect would fall. (2) I have never lied, because lying diminishes chivalry. (3) I have never committed adultery because I feared that it would be done to me. (4) I have never worshiped an idol because I know that it does not harm, nor does it benefit. So, the Prophet (s) put his hand on his shoulder and said: It is Allah's responsibility to give you two wings so that you may fly with the angels in Paradise.
