1 حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ره عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ رَفِيعٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ إِنَّ عِنْدَ رَأْسِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ (ع) لَتُرْبَةً حَمْرَاءَ فِيهَا شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ إِلَّا السَّامَ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ الْقَبْرَ بَعْدَ مَا سَمِعْنَا هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ فَاحْتَفَرْنَا عِنْدَ رَأْسِ الْقَبْرِ فَلَمَّا حَفَرْنَا قَدْرَ ذِرَاعٍ انْحَدَرَتْ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ رَأْسِ الْقَبْرِ مِثْلُ السَّهْلَةِ حَمْرَاءَ قَدْرَ دِرْهَمٍ فَحَمَلْنَاهُ إِلَى الْكُوفَةِ فَمَزَجْنَاهُ وَ خَبَيْنَاهُ فَأَقْبَلْنَا نُعْطِي النَّاسَ يَتَدَاوَوْنَ بِهِ

1. My father narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Ya’qūb ibn Yazǐd, from Ĥasan ibn ‘Ali, from Yūnus ibn Rafǐ’ (Rabǐ’), who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said, “There is some red dust next to the head of Ĥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) which is the cure for every disease except death.” After we heard this Ĥadǐth, we went to the Grave (of Ĥusain (a.s.)) and started digging (the area) next to the head of the grave. After digging an ell, about one dirham of red dust which looked like sand started to flow down from the direction of the head. We took it to Kūfah, mixed it (with water), and covered it. Then we started distributing it to people to cure their diseases.

2 حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ره وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ وَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ سَعْدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ رِزْقِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو السَّرَّاجِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ يُؤْخَذُ طِينُ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) مِنْ عِنْدِ الْقَبْرِ عَلَى قَدْرِ سَبْعِينَ بَاعاً

2. My father, Muĥammad ibn Ĥasan, and ‘Ali ibn Ĥusain all narrated to me from Sa’d, from Aĥmad ibn Muĥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Rizqillāh ibn ‘Alā, from Sulaymān ibn ‘Amr Al-Sarrāj, from some of our companions, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said: The clay of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.) can be collected from up to a distance of seventy fathoms from the grave.

3 حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ النَّهَاوَنْدِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ إِذَا تَنَاوَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنْ طِينِ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) فَلْيَقُلْ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّ الْمَلَكِ الَّذِي تَنَاوَلَهُ- وَ الرَّسُولِ الَّذِي بَوَّأَهُ وَ الْوَصِيِّ الَّذِي ضُمِّنَ فِيهِ أَنْ تَجْعَلَهُ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ كَذَا وَ كَذَا وَ يُسَمِّي ذَلِكَ الدَّاءَ

3. ‘Ali ibn Ĥusain narrated to me from ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhǐm, from Ibrāhǐm ibn Isĥāq Al-Nahāwandi, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Ĥammād Al-Anšāri, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Sinān, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said: When one of you holds the clay of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.), you should recite (the following):                     O Allāh! I ask You through the right of the angel who picked it, and the Messenger who appointed it, and the Successor who is lying within it to make it the cure from every disease (and from this disease) – mention the name of the disease.

4 حَدَّثَنِي حَكِيمُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الرَّيَّانِ بْنِ الصَّلْتِ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَسَدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مَصْقَلَةَ عَنْ عَمِّهِ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْمَوْصِلِيِّ أَنَّ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ (ع) قَالَ إِذَا أَخَذْتَ طِينَ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ فَقُلْ اللَّهُمَّ بِحَقِّ هَذِهِ التُّرْبَةِ وَ بِحَقِّ الْمَلَكِ الْمُوَكَّلِ بِهَا وَ الْمَلَكِ الَّذِي كَرَبَهَا وَ بِحَقِّ الْوَصِيِّ الَّذِي هُوَ فِيهَا صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ اجْعَلْ هَذَا الطِّينَ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ أَمَاناً مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ فَإِنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ كَانَ حَتْماً شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ أَمَاناً مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ

4. Ĥukaym ibn Dāwūd narrated to me from Salamah, from ‘Ali ibn Rayyān ibn Šalt, from Ĥusain ibn Asad, from Aĥmad ibn Mušqalah, from his uncle, from Abǐ Ja’far Al-Mūšili, who said: Abū Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) said: When you take from the clay of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.), you should say:                                 O Allāh! I ask You through the right of this dust, through the right of the angel who is dedicated to it and the angel who dug it, and through the right of the Successor who is (lying) in it to send Your blessing on Muĥammad and the family of Muĥammad and to make this clay the cure from every disease and the protection against any fear. If you do this, then this clay will definitely be a cure for you from every disease and protection against any fear.

5 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَصَمِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو شَيْخٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ الثُّمَالِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ كُنْتُ بِمَكَّةَ وَ ذَكَرَ فِي حَدِيثِهِ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَصْحَابَنَا يَأْخُذُونَ مِنْ طِينِ الْحَائِرِ لَيَسْتَشْفُونَ [يَسْتَشْفُون بِهِ- هَلْ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْءٌ مِمَّا يَقُولُونَ مِنَ الشِّفَاءِ قَالَ قَالَ يُسْتَشْفَى بِمَا بَيْنَهُ وَ بَيْنَ الْقَبْرِ عَلَى رَأْسِ أَرْبَعَةِ أَمْيَالٍ وَ كَذَلِكَ قَبْرُ جَدِّي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ كَذَلِكَ طِينُ قَبْرِ الْحَسَنِ وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ مُحَمَّدٍ فَخُذْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّهَا شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ سُقْمٍ وَ جُنَّةٌ مِمَّا تَخَافُ وَ لَا يَعْدِلُهَا شَيْءٌ مِنَ الْأَشْيَاءِ الَّتِي يُسْتَشْفَى بِهَا إِلَّا الدُّعَاءُ وَ إِنَّمَا يُفْسِدُهَا مَا يُخَالِطُهَا مِنْ أَوْعِيَتِهَا وَ قِلَّةُ الْيَقِينِ لِمَنْ يُعَالِجُ بِهَا فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَيْقَنَ أَنَّهَا لَهُ شِفَاءٌ إِذَا يُعَالِجُ بِهَا كَفَتْهُ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ مِنْ غَيْرِهَا مِمَّا يُعَالَجُ بِهِ وَ يُفْسِدُهَا الشَّيَاطِينُ وَ الْجِنُّ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُفْرِ مِنْهُمْ يَتَمَسَّحُونَ بِهَا وَ مَا تَمُرُّ بِشَيْءٍ إِلَّا شَمَّهَا وَ أَمَّا الشَّيَاطِينُ وَ كُفَّارُ الْجِنِّ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَحْسُدُونَ بَنِي آدَمَ عَلَيْهَا فَيَتَمَسَّحُونَ بِهَا لِيَذْهَبَ عَامَّةُ طِيبِهَا وَ لَا يُخْرَجُ الطِّينُ مِنَ الْحَائِرِ إِلَّا وَ قَدِ اسْتَعَدَّ لَهُ مَا لَا يُحْصَى مِنْهُمْ وَ أَنَّهُ لَفِي يَدِ صَاحِبِهَا وَ هُمْ يَتَمَسَّحُونَ بِهَا وَ لَا يَقْدِرُونَ مَعَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ أَنْ يَدْخُلُوا الْحَائِرَ وَ لَوْ كَانَ مِنَ التُّرْبَةِ شَيْءٌ يَسْلَمُ مَا عُولِجَ بِهِ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا بَرَأَ مِنْ سَاعَتِهِ فَإِذَا أَخَذْتَهَا فَاكْتُمْهَا وَ أَكْثِرْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَ قَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ بَعْضَ مَنْ يَأْخُذُ مِنَ التُّرْبَةِ شَيْئاً يَسْتَخِفُّ بِهِ حَتَّى إِنَّ بَعْضَهُمْ لَيَطْرَحُهَا فِي مِخْلَاةِ الْبَغْلِ وَ الْحِمَارِ وَ فِي وِعَاءِ الطَّعَامِ وَ مَا يُمْسَحُ بِهِ الْأَيْدِي مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَ الْخُرْجِ وَ الْجُوَالِقِ فَكَيْفَ يَسْتَشْفِي بِهِ مَنْ هَذَا حَالُهُ عِنْدَهُ وَ لَكِنَّ الْقَلْبَ الَّذِي لَيْسَ فِيهِ يَقِينٌ مِنَ الْمُسْتَخِفِّ بِمَا فِيهِ صَلَاحُهُ يُفْسِدُ عَلَيْهِ عَمَلَهُ

5. Muĥammad ibn Ĥasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Mahziyār narrated to me from his grandfather ‘Ali ibn Mahziyār, from Ĥasan ibn Sa’ǐd, from ‘Abdillāh ibn ‘Abdil Raĥmān Al-Ašam, from Abǐ ‘Amr – a scholar from Kūfah, from Abǐ Ĥamzah Al-Thumāli, who said: I was in Makkah when I said to Abǐ ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)), “May I sacrifice myself for you! I have seen some of our companions take some of the clay of the Ĥā`ir and seek cure with it. Does it contain any cure like they say it does?” Imam (a.s.) replied: It can be used as a cure even if it is collected from the distance of four miles away from the Grave (of Ĥusain (a.s.)). The same applies to the grave of my grandfather, the Messenger of Allāh (s.a.a.w.), and the same applies to the clay of the graves of Ĥasan (a.s.), ‘Ali (Imam Sajjād (a.s.)), and Muĥammad (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)). Take some of it (the clay of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.)), for verily it is a cure for every disease and a shield against any fearful matter. Nothing else from among that which is used to cure (an ailment) can be compared to it except supplication. However, the containers in which it is (often) kept and the lack of certainty of those who treat themselves with it spoils it. Those who are certain that if they treat themselves with it, they will be cured, (will find that) it will suffice them with the permission of Allāh from having to use any other medicine. The devils and the disbeliever Jinns also spoil it by rubbing themselves against it. Nothing passes by it without smelling it. As for the devils and the disbeliever Jinns, they envy humans because of it so they rub themselves against it and all of its fragrance vanishes. An innumerable number from among them (the devils and the disbeliever Jinns) prepare themselves as soon as the clay leaves the Ĥā`ir – for they cannot enter the Ĥā`ir because of the angels (who guard it) – and they rub themselves against the clay while it is in the hands of the person who is carrying it. If any part of this dust remained intact and was used to treat any patient, he would be cured immediately. So when you take from this clay, keep it hidden and mention Allāh, the Exalted, increasingly on it. I have been informed that some of the people who take from the dust belittle it so much that some of them even place it in the feedbag of their camels, mules and donkeys, or in their own food containers, or in the handkerchiefs which are used to wipe the hands after eating, or in their saddlebags!!! How can a person who dishonours it in this way seek cure with it?!!! (Verily) the uncertain hearts of those who belittle that which leads to their righteousness will ruin its effect.

6 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ رِزْقِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو السَّرَّاجِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ يُؤْخَذُ طِينُ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) مِنْ عِنْدِ الْقَبْرِ عَلَى سَبْعِينَ بَاعاً فِي سَبْعِينَ بَاعاً

6. Muĥammad ibn Ĥasan narrated to me from Muĥammad ibn Ĥasan Al-Šaffār, from Aĥmad ibn Muĥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Rizqillāh ibn ‘Alā, from Sulaymān ibn ‘Amr Al-Sarrāj, from some of our companions, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said: The clay of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.) can be collected from up to (a radius of) seventy fathoms by seventy fathoms from the grave.

7 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ الْخَتْمُ عَلَى طِينِ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) أَنْ يُقْرَأَ عَلَيْهِ إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ

7. Muĥammad ibn Ya’qūb narrated to me from ‘Ali ibn Muĥammad, who narrated that: He said: In order to seal the clay of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.) one should recite (the chapter of) Innā Anzalnāh on it.

8 وَ رُوِيَ إِذَا أَخَذْتَهُ فَقُلْ اللَّهُمَّ بِحَقِّ هَذِهِ التُّرْبَةِ الطَّاهِرَةِ وَ بِحَقِّ الْبُقْعَةِ الطَّيِّبَةِ وَ بِحَقِّ الْوَصِيِّ الَّذِي تُوَارِيهِ وَ بِحَقِّ جَدِّهِ وَ أَبِيهِ وَ أُمِّهِ وَ أَخِيهِ وَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ الَّذِينَ يَحُفُّونَ بِهِ وَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ الْعُكُوفِ عَلَى قَبْرِ وَلِيِّكَ- يَنْتَظِرُونَ نَصْرَهُ (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَجْمَعِينَ) وَ اجْعَلْ لِي فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ أَمَاناً مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ وَ غِنًى مِنْ كُلِّ فَقْرٍ وَ عِزّاً مِنْ كُلِّ ذُلٍّ وَ أَوْسِعْ بِهِ عَلَيَّ فِي رِزْقِي وَ أَصِحَّ بِهِ جِسْمِي

8. It is narrated that: When one takes from the clay of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.), he should recite (the following):                                                             O Allāh! I ask You through the right of this purified dust, through the right of the blessed spot, through the right of the Successor who is buried in it, and through the right of his grandfather, his father, his mother, his brother, the angels who surround him, and the angels who have devoted themselves to the grave of Your Walǐ awaiting (the day of) his support – may Allāh’s blessing be upon all of them – to place my cure against every disease in it, to make it my protection against any fear, to make it my wealth at the time of need, to make it my honour against any disgraceful matter, to increase my sustenance through it, and to keep my body healthy through it.

9 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْحِمْيَرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ الْبَصْرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَصَمِّ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) حَرِيمُ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) فَرْسَخٌ فِي فَرْسَخٍ فِي فَرْسَخٍ فِي فَرْسَخٍ

9. Muĥammad ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn Ja’far Al-Ĥimyari narrated to me from his father, from ‘Ali ibn Muĥammad ibn Sālim, from Muĥammad ibn Khālid, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Ĥammād Al-Bašri, from ‘Abdillāh ibn ‘Abdil Raĥmān Al-Ašam, from someone from Kūfah, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said: The sacred boundaries of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.) are one parasang by one parasang by one parasang by one parasang.

10 حَدَّثَنِي جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُوسَوِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ [عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ] بْنِ نَهِيكٍ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) إِنِّي رَجُلٌ كَثِيرُ الْعِلَلِ وَ الْأَمْرَاضِ وَ مَا تَرَكْتُ دَوَاءً إِلَّا وَ قَدْ تَدَاوَيْتُ بِهِ فَقَالَ لِي فَأَيْنَ أَنْتَ عَنْ تُرْبَةِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) فَإِنَّ فِيهَا الشِّفَاءَ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ الْأَمْنَ مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ وَ قُلْ إِذَا أَخَذْتَهُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّ هَذِهِ الطِّينَةِ وَ بِحَقِّ الْمَلَكِ الَّذِي أَخَذَهَا وَ بِحَقِّ النَّبِيِّ الَّذِي قَبَضَهَا وَ بِحَقِّ الْوَصِيِّ الَّذِي حَلَّ فِيهَا صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ وَ اجْعَلْ لِي فِيهَا شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ أَمَاناً مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ- قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الْمَلَكَ الَّذِي أَخَذَهَا جَبْرَائِيلُ وَ أَرَاهَا النَّبِيَّ (ص) فَقَالَ هَذِهِ تُرْبَةُ ابْنِكَ هَذَا تَقْتُلُهُ أُمَّتُكَ مِنْ بَعْدِكَ وَ النَّبِيُّ الَّذِي قَبَضَهَا فَهُوَ مُحَمَّدٌ (ص) وَ أَمَّا الْوَصِيُّ الَّذِي حَلَّ فِيهَا فَهُوَ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ سَيِّدُ الشُّهَدَاءِ قُلْتُ قَدْ عَرَفْتُ الشِّفَاءَ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ فَكَيْفَ [فَمَا] الْأَمَانُ مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ قَالَ إِذَا خِفْتَ سُلْطَاناً أَوْ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ فَلَا تَخْرُجْ مِنْ مَنْزِلِكَ إِلَّا وَ مَعَكَ مِنْ طِينِ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) وَ قُلْ إِذَا أَخَذْتَهُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ هَذِهِ طِينَةُ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ وَلِيِّكَ وَ ابْنِ وَلِيِّكَ اتَّخَذْتُهَا حِرْزاً لِمَا أَخَافُ وَ لِمَا لَا أَخَافُ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ يَرِدُ عَلَيْكَ مَا لَا تَخَافُ قَالَ الرَّجُلُ فَأَخَذْتُهَا كَمَا قَالَ فَصَحَّ وَ اللَّهِ بَدَنِي وَ كَانَ لِي أَمَاناً مِنْ كُلِّ مَا خِفْتُ وَ مَا لَمْ أَخَفْ كَمَا قَالَ فَمَا رَأَيْتُ بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ بَعْدَهَا مَكْرُوهاً

10. Ja’far ibn Muĥammad ibn Ibrāhǐm Al-Mūsawi narrated to me from ‘Abdillāh ibn Nahǐk, from Sa’d ibn Šāliĥ, from Ĥasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Abǐ Mughǐrah, from one of our companions, who said: I said to Abǐ ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)), “I am a man with many illnesses and diseases and there is not any medicine that I have not tried.” Imam (a.s.) said: Why have you not used the dust (from the grave) of Ĥusain (a.s.)?! Verily it contains the cure for every disease and it is protection against any fear. When you take from it you should say:                                    O Allāh! I ask You through the right of this clay, through the right of the angel who took from it, through the right of the Prophet who held it, and through the right of the Successor who is lying in it to send Your blessing on Muĥammad and his family and to make it my cure against every disease and my protection against any fear. Then Imam (a.s.) added: The angel who took from it was Jabra`ǐl who showed it to the Prophet (s.a.a.w.) and said, “This is the dust of this son of yours. Your nation will kill him after you.” The prophet who held it was Muĥammad (s.a.a.w.) and the successor who is lying in it is Ĥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.), the Master of the Martyrs. I said, “I understand that it is a cure for every disease but how is it a protection against any fear?” Imam (a.s.) replied: If you fear a ruler or anything similar to that, do not leave your house without carrying some of the clay of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.). When you take from it, you should say:                 O Allāh! This is the clay of the grave of Ĥusain, Your Walǐ and the son of Your Walǐ, and I have carried it as protection against that which I fear and that which I do not. Imam (a.s.) added, “Verily it is possible that a tragedy which you do not fear might befall you.” So I took it as he had ordered and I swear to Allāh that I became healthy. It was also my protection against that which I feared and against that which I did not fear, just as the Imam (a.s.) had said. Praise be to Allāh that I have not seen any misfortune ever since.

11 أَخْبَرَنِي حَكِيمُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ [مُحَمَّدِ] بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ الْقَزْوِينِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي بَكَّارٍ قَالَ أَخَذْتُ مِنَ التُّرْبَةِ الَّتِي عِنْدَ رَأْسِ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ (ع) فَإِنَّهَا طِينَةٌ حَمْرَاءُ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى الرِّضَا (ع) فَعَرَضْتُهَا عَلَيْهِ فَأَخَذَهَا فِي كَفِّهِ ثُمَّ شَمَّهَا ثُمَّ بَكَى حَتَّى جَرَتْ دُمُوعُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذِهِ تُرْبَةُ جَدِّي

11. Ĥukaym ibn Dāwūd ibn Ĥukaym narrated to me from Salamah, from Aĥmad/Muĥammad ibn Isĥāq Al-Qazwǐni, from Abǐ Bakkār, who said: I took some of the dust which is close to the head of the grave of Ĥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.). It was a red-coloured clay. I took it to Imam Riďā (a.s.) to show it to him. He held it in his palm, smelled it, and started to cry, shedding tears. Then he (the Imam (a.s.)) said, “This is the dust of (the grave of) my grandfather.”

12 حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ بِالْعَسْكَرِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ الثُّمَالِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ الصَّادِقُ (ع) إِذَا أَرَدْتَ حَمْلَ الطِّينِ مِنْ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) فَاقْرَأْ فَاتِحَةَ الْكِتَابِ وَ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ وَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ وَ إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ وَ يس وَ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَ تَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَ رَسُولِكَ وَ حَبِيبِكَ وَ نَبِيِّكَ وَ أَمِينِكَ وَ بِحَقِّ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ عَبْدِكَ وَ أَخِي رَسُولِكَ وَ بِحَقِّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ نَبِيِّكَ وَ زَوْجَةِ وَلِيِّكَ وَ بِحَقِّ الْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ بِحَقِّ الْأَئِمَّةِ الرَّاشِدِينَ- وَ بِحَقِّ هَذِهِ التُّرْبَةِ وَ بِحَقِّ الْمَلَكِ الْمُوَكَّلِ بِهَا وَ بِحَقِّ الْوَصِيِّ الَّذِي حَلَّ فِيهَا- وَ بِحَقِّ الْجَسَدِ الَّذِي تَضَمَّنَتْ وَ بِحَقِّ السِّبْطِ الَّذِي ضُمِّنَتْ وَ بِحَقِّ جَمِيعِ مَلَائِكَتِكَ وَ أَنْبِيَائِكَ وَ رُسُلِكَ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ اجْعَلْ لِي هَذَا الطِّينَ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ لِمَنْ يَسْتَشْفِي بِهِ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ سُقْمٍ وَ مَرَضٍ وَ أَمَاناً مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ اللَّهُمَّ بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ اجْعَلْهُ عِلْماً نَافِعاً وَ رِزْقاً وَاسِعاً وَ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ سُقْمٍ وَ آفَةٍ وَ عَاهَةٍ- وَ جَمِيعِ الْأَوْجَاعِ كُلِّهَا- إِنَّكَ عَلى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ وَ تَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ التُّرْبَةِ الْمُبَارَكَةِ الْمَيْمُونَةِ وَ الْمَلَكِ الَّذِي هَبَطَ بِهَا وَ الْوَصِيِّ الَّذِي هُوَ فِيهَا صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ سَلِّمْ وَ انْفَعْنِي بِهَا- إِنَّكَ عَلى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

12. Abū ‘Abdil Raĥmān Muĥammad ibn Aĥmad ibn Ĥusain Al-‘Askari narrated to me in ‘Askar (Mukram) from Ĥasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Mahziyār, from his father, from Muĥammad ibn Abǐ ‘Umayr, from Muĥammad ibn Marwān, from Abǐ Ĥamzah Al-Thumāli, who said: Imam Šādiq (a.s.) said: When you want to carry some of the clay of the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.) with you, recite (the Chapters) Fātiĥah, Mu’awwadhatayn, Qul Huwallāhu Aĥad, Innā Anzalnāh, Yā Sǐn, and Āyatul Kursǐ. Then recite (the following):         O Allāh! (I ask You) through the right of Muĥammad, Your slave, Your Messenger, Your love, Your Prophet, and Your guardian!          And (I ask You) through the right of the Commander of the Believers, ‘Ali ibn Abǐ Ťālib, Your slave and the brother of Your Messenger!       And (I ask You) through the right of Fāťimah, the daughter of Your Prophet and the wife of Your Walǐ!       And (I ask You) through the right of Ĥasan and Ĥusain and through the right of the Rightly Guided Imams!        And (I ask You) through the right of this dust and through the right of the angel who is dedicated to it!              And (I ask You) through the right of the Successor who is buried in this dust, through the right of the body which is lying within it, and through the right of the grandson who is held within it!                               And I ask You through the right of all of Your angels, prophets, and messengers to send Your blessing on Muĥammad and the family of Muĥammad and to make this clay my cure from every disease and for anyone who uses it as the cure against every disease, illness, and ailment. (Also) make it my protection against any fear.                          O Allāh! I ask You through the right of Muĥammad and his family to make it (the cause of) beneficial knowledge and extensive sustenance (for me) and to make it my cure from every disease, illness, sickness, plague, disability, and all pain. Verily You have power over all things. Then recite (the following):                            O Lord of this blessed and prosperous dust! (O Lord) of the angel who brought it down with him! (O Lord) of the Successor who is (buried) in it! Send Your Salām and blessing on Muĥammad and the family of Muĥammad and allow me to benefit from it. Verily You have power over all things.
