1 حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي (رحمه الله) وَ جَمَاعَةُ مَشَايِخِي عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ بَشِيرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَصِيرٍ يَقُولُ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) بَعَثَ هِشَامُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ إِلَى أَبِي فَأَشْخَصَهُ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ لَهُ يَا أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ أَشْخَصْنَاكَ لِنَسْأَلَكَ عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ لَمْ يَصْلُحْ أَنْ يَسْأَلَكَ عَنْهَا غَيْرِي وَ لَا أَعْلَمُ فِي الْأَرْضِ خَلْقاً يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَعْرِفَ أَوْ عَرَفَ هَذِهِ الْمَسْأَلَةَ إِنْ كَانَ إِلَّا وَاحِداً فَقَالَ أَبِي لِيَسْأَلْنِي أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَمَّا أَحَبَّ فَإِنْ عَلِمْتُ أَجَبْتُ ذَلِكَ وَ إِنْ لَمْ أَعْلَمْ قُلْتُ لَا أَدْرِي وَ كَانَ الصِّدْقُ أَوْلَى بِي فَقَالَ هِشَامٌ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ اللَّيْلَةِ الَّتِي قُتِلَ فِيهَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍع بِمَا اسْتَدَلَّ بِهِ الْغَائِبُ عَنِ الْمِصْرِ الَّذِي قُتِلَ فِيهِ عَلَى قَتْلِهِ وَ مَا الْعَلَامَةُ فِيهِ لِلنَّاسِ- فَإِنْ عَلِمْتَ ذَلِكَ وَ أَجَبْتَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي هَلْ كَانَ تِلْكَ الْعَلَامَةُ لِغَيْرِ عَلِيٍّ (ع) فِي قَتْلِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبِي يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنَّهُ لَمَّا كَانَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي قُتِلَ فِيهَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (ع) لَمْ يُرْفَعْ عَنْ وَجْهِ الْأَرْضِ حَجَرٌ إِلَّا وُجِدَ تَحْتَهُ دَمٌ عَبِيطٌ حَتَّى طَلَعَ الْفَجْرُ وَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي قُتِلَ فِيهَا هَارُونُ أَخُو مُوسَى (ع) وَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي قُتِلَ فِيهَا يُوشَعُ بْنُ نُونٍ وَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي رُفِعَ فِيهَا عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي قُتِلَ فِيهَا شَمْعُونُ بْنُ حَمُّونَ الصَّفَا وَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي قُتِلَ فِيهَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ (ع) وَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي قُتِلَ فِيهَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ (ع) قَالَ فَتَرَبَّدَ وَجْهُ هِشَامٍ حَتَّى انْتَقَعَ لَوْنُهُ وَ هَمَّ أَنْ يَبْطِشَ بِأَبِي فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبِي يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الْوَاجِبُ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ الطَّاعَةُ لِإِمَامِهِمْ وَ الصِّدْقُ لَهُ بِالنَّصِيحَةِ وَ إِنَّ الَّذِي دَعَانِي إِلَى أَنْ أُجِيبَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِيمَا سَأَلَنِي عَنْهُ مَعْرِفَتِي إِيَّاهُ بِمَا يَجِبُ لَهُ عَلَيَّ مِنَ الطَّاعَةِ فَلْيُحْسِنْ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَيَّ الظَّنَّ فَقَالَ لَهُ هِشَامٌ انْصَرِفْ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ إِذَا شِئْتَ قَالَ فَخَرَجَ فَقَالَ لَهُ هِشَامٌ عِنْدَ خُرُوجِهِ أَعْطِنِي عَهْدَ اللَّهِ وَ مِيثَاقَهُ أَنْ لَا تُوَقِّعَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ إِلَى أَحَدٍ حَتَّى أَمُوتَ فَأَعْطَاهُ أَبِي مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَا أَرْضَاهُ وَ ذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ بِطُولِهِ

1. My father and all of my scholars narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Aĥmad ibn Muĥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Ĥusain ibn Sa’ǐd, from someone, from Yaĥyā ibn Bashǐr, from Abǐ Bašǐr, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said: Hishām ibn ‘Abdil Malik sent (some of his soldiers) to take my father (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) to Shām. When my father (a.s.) entered (the palace), Hishām said, “O Abā Ja’far! I have brought you here to ask you a question that should not be asked by anyone other than me. I do not think that it is possible for anyone to know of this matter nor do I think that anyone is even capable of knowing of this matter except for one man.” My father (a.s.) said, “The commander of the believers can ask me whatever he wishes. If I know the answer, I will answer it. And if I do not, I will say that I do not know, for truth is more worthy of being told.” Hishām asked: Tell me about the night on which ‘Ali ibn Abǐ Ťālib (a.s.) was killed. How did those who were absent from the city in which he was killed learn of his killing? And what was the sign of his death (that appeared) for the people? If you know the answer, then tell me if that sign ever reappeared at the death of anyone other than ‘Ali (a.s.). My father (a.s.) said: O commander of the believers! On the night on which the Commander of the Believers (a.s.) was killed, no rock was moved (anywhere) on earth without fresh blood being seen under it until the break of dawn. The same thing happened on the night on which Hārūn (a.s.), brother of Mūsā (a.s.), was killed. The same thing happened on the night on which Yūsha’ ibn Nūn (a.s.) was killed. The same thing happened on the night on which ‘Isā ibn Maryam (a.s.) was raised to the sky. The same thing happened on the night on which Sham’ūn ibn Ĥammūn Al-Šafā (a.s.) was killed. The same thing happened on the night on which ‘Ali ibn Abǐ Ťālib (a.s.) was killed. The same thing happened on the night on which Ĥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) was killed. Imam Šādiq (a.s.) continued: Hishām’s face and colour changed out of anger (when he heard this) and he was about to attack my father (a.s.). However, my father (a.s.) said, “O commander of the believers! It is obligatory for the slaves (of Allāh) to obey their Imam and to be truthful to him. That which led me to answer this question was my knowledge of the fact that I have to obey the commander of the believers. So may the commander of the believers judge me favourably!” Hishām said, “You may return to your family if you so choose.” So as my father (a.s.) was leaving, Hishām asked him to promise him not to narrate this Ĥadǐth to anyone for as long as Hishām lived, to which my father (a.s.) agreed.

2 حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ النَّاقِدُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ الْبَلْخِيُّ [السُّلَمِيُّ] قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ وَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمِّي عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ وَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ عَرَفْنَا أَهْلَ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ وَ نَوَاحِيهَا عَشِيَّةَ قَتْلِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ (ع) قُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ ذَاكَ- قَالَ مَا رَفَعْنَا حَجَراً وَ لَا مَدَراً وَ لَا صَخْراً إِلَّا وَ رَأَيْنَا تَحْتَهَا دَماً عَبِيطاً يَغْلِي وَ احْمَرَّتِ الْحِيطَانُ كَالْعَلَقِ وَ مُطِرَ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامِ دَماً عَبِيطاً وَ سَمِعْنَا مُنَادِياً يُنَادِي فِي جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ يَقُولُ- أَ تَرْجُو أُمَّةٌ قَتَلَتْ حُسَيْناً * * * شَفَاعَةَ جَدِّهِ يَوْمَ الْحِسَابِ مَعَاذَ اللَّهِ لَا نِلْتُمْ يَقِيناً * * * شَفَاعَةَ أَحْمَدَ وَ أَبِي تُرَابٍ قَتَلْتُمْ خَيْرَ مَنْ رَكِبَ الْمَطَايَا * * * وَ خَيْرَ الشِّيبِ طُرّاً وَ الشَّبَابِ - وَ انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ ثُمَّ تَجَلَّتْ عَنْهَا وَ انْشَبَكَتِ النُّجُومُ فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنْ غَدٍ أُرْجِفْنَا بِقَتْلِهِ فَلَمْ يَأْتِ عَلَيْنَا كَثِيرُ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى نُعِيَ إِلَيْنَا الْحُسَيْنُ ع

2. Abul Ĥusain Aĥmad ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn ‘Ali Al-Nāqid narrated to me from ‘Abdil Raĥmān Al-Balkhi, and from his uncle, from his father, from Abǐ Našr, who said: A man from Bayt Al-Maqdis said, “I swear to Allāh that we, the people of Bayt Al-Maqdis and its suburbs, learned of the killing of Ĥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) on the eve of the day on which he was killed.” I (Abū Našr) asked, “How did they learn of it?” He replied: We did not move any rock, stone, or mud without seeing fresh, boiling blood under it. And all of the walls became red like blood. The skies rained fresh blood for three days and at night we heard a caller crying out the following poem: Does the nation that killed Ĥusain (a.s.) hope to receive the intercession of his grandfather on the Day of Judgment!? Verily Allāh forbids you to receive the intercession of Aĥmad (s.a.a.w.) and Abǐ Turāb (a.s.). You have killed the best of all those who ever rode (a sumpter). You have killed the best of everyone from among the youth to the elderly. There was a solar eclipse that lasted three days, after which the sky became filled with so many stars (that they were almost colliding with one another). On the next day, we were grief-stricken about the killing of Ĥusain (a.s.). Shortly thereafter, we learned the disastrous news of the killing of Ĥusain (a.s.).

3 حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ النَّاقِدُ بِإِسْنَادِهِ قَالَ قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو مَعْشَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ لَمَّا قُتِلَ الْحُسَيْنُ (ع) لَمْ يَبْقَ فِي بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ حَصَاةٌ إِلَّا وُجِدَ تَحْتَهَا دَمٌ عَبِيطٌ

3. Abul Ĥusain Aĥmad ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn ‘Ali Al-Nāqid narrated to me through his Isnād from ‘Umar ibn Sa’d, from Abǐ Ma’shar, from Al-Zuhri, who said: When Ĥusain (a.s.) was killed, no stone was moved in Bayt Al-Maqdis without seeing fresh blood under it.
