1 حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي (رحمه الله) قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي خَلَفٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى وَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْخَطَّابِ وَ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ جَمِيعاً عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ إِنَّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الَّذِي قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي كِتَابِهِ- وَ اذْكُرْ فِي الْكِتابِ إِسْماعِيلَ إِنَّهُ كانَ صادِقَ الْوَعْدِ وَ كانَ رَسُولًا نَبِيًّا لَمْ يَكُنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ (ع) كَانَ نَبِيّاً مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ فَأَخَذُوهُ فَسَلَخُوا فَرْوَةَ رَأْسِهِ وَ وَجْهِهِ- فَأَتَاهُ مَلَكٌ عَنِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَعَثَنِي إِلَيْكَ فَمُرْنِي بِمَا شِئْتَ فَقَالَ لِي أُسْوَةٌ بِمَا يُصْنَعُ بِالْحُسَيْنِ ع

1. My father narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn Abǐ Khalaf, from Aĥmad ibn Muĥammad ibn ‘Isā, Muĥammad ibn Ĥusain ibn Abil Khaťťāb, and Ya’qūb ibn Yazǐd, from Muĥammad ibn Sinān, from someone whose name he mentioned, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said: Ismā’ǐl, who is mentioned in this verse, “(Also) mention Ismā’ǐl in the book. Verily he was (ever) true of his promise, and he was a messenger, and a prophet” (19:54), is not Ismā’ǐl, the son of Ibrāhǐm (a.s.). He was a prophet whom Allāh had sent to his own people. However, his people captured him and skinned his scalp and his face. An angel came to him from Allāh, the Blessed and the Exalted, and said, “Allāh has sent me to you. So order me to do that which you want (to this nation).” He replied, “I follow the example of Ĥusain (a.s.) and that which will happen to him.”

2 وَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي (رحمه الله) عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْهُمَا جَمِيعاً عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِلَّهِ رَسُولًا نَبِيّاً تَسَلَّطَ عَلَيْهِ قَوْمُهُ فَقَشَرُوا جِلْدَةَ وَجْهِهِ وَ فَرْوَةَ رَأْسِهِ- فَأَتَاهُ رَسُولٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَبُّكَ يُقْرِئُكَ السَّلَامَ وَ يَقُولُ قَدْ رَأَيْتُ مَا صُنِعَ بِكَ وَ قَدْ أَمَرَنِي بِطَاعَتِكَ فَمُرْنِي بِمَا شِئْتَ فَقَالَ يَكُونُ لِي بِالْحُسَيْنِ أُسْوَةٌ

2. My father narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Aĥmad ibn Muĥammad ibn ‘Isā, Muĥammad ibn Ĥusain ibn Abil Khaťťāb, and Ya’qūb ibn Yazǐd, from Muĥammad ibn Sinān, from ‘Ammār ibn Marwān, from Samā’ah ibn Mihrān, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said: The nation of one of Allāh’s prophets, who was (also) a messenger, overpowered him. They skinned his face and his scalp. A messenger (an angel) from the Lord of the Worlds came to him and said: Your Lord conveys His Salām to you and says, “I see what they are doing to you.” And He has ordered me to obey you. Therefore, order me to do that which you want (to this nation). He replied, “I follow the example of Ĥusain (a.s.).”

3 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الرَّزَّازُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْخَطَّابِ وَ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مَرْوَانَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ بُرَيْدِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْعِجْلِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الَّذِي ذَكَرَهُ اللَّهُ فِي كِتَابِهِ حَيْثُ يَقُولُ- وَ اذْكُرْ فِي الْكِتابِ إِسْماعِيلَ إِنَّهُ كانَ صادِقَ الْوَعْدِ وَ كانَ رَسُولًا نَبِيًّا أَ كَانَ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ (ع) فَإِنَّ النَّاسَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّهُ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَالَ (ع) إِنَّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ مَاتَ قَبْلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَ إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ كَانَ حُجَّةً لِلَّهِ كُلَّهَا [قَائِماً] صَاحِبَ شَرِيعَةٍ فَإِلَى مَنْ أُرْسِلَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ إِذَنْ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَمَنْ كَانَ قَالَ (ع) ذَاكَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ حِزْقِيلَ النَّبِيُّ (ع) بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَقَتَلُوهُ وَ سَلَخُوا وَجْهَهُ فَغَضِبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَوَجَّهَ إِلَيْهِ أَسْطَاطَائِيلَ مَلَكَ الْعَذَابِ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَنَا أَسَطَاطَائِيلُ مَلَكُ الْعَذَابِ وَجَّهَنِي إِلَيْكَ رَبُّ الْعِزَّةِ لِأُعَذِّبَ قَوْمَكَ بِأَنْوَاعِ الْعَذَابِ إِنْ شِئْتَ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِسْمَاعِيلُ لَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِي ذَلِكَ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ فَمَا حَاجَتُكَ يَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ فَقَالَ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّكَ أَخَذْتَ الْمِيثَاقَ لِنَفْسِكَ بِالرُّبُوبِيَّةِ وَ لِمُحَمَّدٍ بِالنُّبُوَّةِ وَ لِأَوْصِيَائِهِ بِالْوَلَايَةِ وَ أَخْبَرْتَ خَيْرَ خَلْقِكَ بِمَا تَفْعَلُ أُمَّتُهُ بِالْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ (ع) مِنْ بَعْدِ نَبِيِّهَا وَ إِنَّكَ وَعَدْتَ الْحُسَيْنَ (ع) أَنْ تَكُرَّهُ إِلَى الدُّنْيَا حَتَّى يَنْتَقِمَ بِنَفْسِهِ مِمَّنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ بِهِ فَحَاجَتِي إِلَيْكَ يَا رَبِّ أَنْ تَكُرَّنِي إِلَى الدُّنْيَا حَتَّى أَنْتَقِمَ مِمَّنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ بِي كَمَا تَكُرُّ الْحُسَيْنَ (ع) فَوَعَدَ اللَّهُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنَ حِزْقِيلَ ذَلِكَ فَهُوَ يُكَرُّ مَعَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع

3. Muĥammad ibn Ja’far Al-Razzāz narrated to me from Muĥammad ibn Ĥusain ibn Abil Khaťťāb, and from Aĥmad ibn Ĥasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Faďďāl, from his father, from Marwān ibn Muslim, from Burayd ibn Mu’āwiyah Al-‘Ijli, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)), “O son of the Messenger of Allāh! Is Ismā’ǐl, the one who is mentioned in this verse, ‘(Also) mention Ismā’ǐl in the book. Verily he was (ever) true of his promise, and he was a messenger, and a prophet’ (19:54), Ismā’ǐl, the son of Ibrāhǐm (a.s.), because the people believe that it is?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Ismā’ǐl died before Ibrāhǐm (a.s.). Ibrāhǐm (a.s.) was Allāh’s Decisive Proof and he was an owner of a SHARǏ’AH (a set of laws of religion). So then to whom was Ismā’ǐl sent?!” I asked, “May I sacrifice my life for you! Then to whom is this verse referring?!” Imam (a.s.) replied: It refers to Ismā’ǐl, son of Prophet Ĥizqǐl (a.s.). Allāh sent him to his people but they belied him, killed him, and skinned his face. So Allāh’s Wrath fell upon them. Allāh sent Saťāťā`ǐl, the Angel of Chastisement, to Ismā’ǐl (a.s.). The angel said, “O Ismā’ǐl! I am Saťāťā`ǐl, the Angel of Chastisement. The Lord of Glory has sent me to you to torment your nation with different kinds of chastisement, if you wish.” “I do not want this,” Ismā’ǐl (a.s.) replied. “O Ismā’ǐl! What do you want then?” Allāh revealed to him. Ismā’ǐl (a.s.) replied: O Lord! You have taken the covenant (from the creation) to accept You as the Lord, Muĥammad (s.a.a.w.) as the Prophet, and his successors (a.s.) as the Divine Authorities. And You informed the Best of Your Creation (the Prophet (s.a.a.w.)) about that which his nation would do to Ĥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) after him. And You promised Ĥusain (a.s.) that You would bring him back in this life so that he can seek revenge against those who killed him. O my Lord! My wish is that You bring me back to life just as You will bring Ĥusain (a.s.) back to life, so that I can seek revenge against those who did this to me. Imam (a.s.) continued, “Allāh promised Ismā’ǐl ibn Ĥizqǐl (a.s.) that He would bring him back to life. Therefore, Ismā’ǐl will return to life with Ĥusain (a.s.).”

4 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ إِنَّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الَّذِي قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي كِتَابِهِ- وَ اذْكُرْ فِي الْكِتابِ إِسْماعِيلَ إِنَّهُ كانَ صادِقَ الْوَعْدِ أُخِذَ فَسُلِخَتْ فَرْوَةُ وَجْهِهِ وَ رَأْسِهِ فَأَتَاهُ مَلَكٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَعَثَنِي إِلَيْكَ فَمُرْنِي بِمَا شِئْتَ فَقَالَ لِي أُسْوَةٌ بِالْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ع

4. Muĥammad ibn Ĥasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Mahziyār narrated to me from his father, from his grandfather ‘Ali ibn Mahziyār, from Muĥammad ibn Sinān, from someone whose name he mentioned, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said: The Ismā’ǐl about whom Allāh says in His Book, “(Also) mention Ismā’ǐl in the book. Verily he was (ever) true of his promise” (19:54), was captured (by his nation) and his face and scalp were skinned. Then an angel came to him and said, “Allāh has sent me to you. So order me to do that which you want (to this nation).” However, Ismā’ǐl (a.s.) replied, “I follow the example of Ĥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.).”
